wtnhunt
Looking to get a new computer to replace this 8 year old compaq. This thing just isnt able to do what I need it to do anymore, have software for our digital camera and video camera that this computer is too slow to run efficiently, and it takes forever to load pics from my digital cameras. Really dont want to spend more than $800 total if I can help it, but need to get something that will be able to handle large picture files and that can be used for photo editing and for video editing, also something that will last a good while like this one has but also be able to expand enough to keep up with new software as it comes out. Have been looking at HP/compaq and dell computers with processors in the 2.2 to 2.4 ghz neighborhood. The hp/compaq's I have been looking at mostly have amd processors, where the dell's have pentiums. I know that compaq computers are built to last well, but dont know so much about dell, have heard that they have issues where they do not hold up well if they are left on due to overheating. This compaq, despite having some software problems has never really had any hardware problems, and it has stayed on standby when not using it for most of its life. Open to suggestions. OJR
Re: Computer suggestion I have had this Dell for about 3 years and have never had any problem. It is on from the time I get up until I go to bed! I did have a software problem, called and they corrected it within about 15 minutes and that was 2 years ago! I bought the extended, 3 year warranty when I got the computer! I had a Gateway before this one it was a piece of junk and their customer service was terrible! I will never look at anything from them again!
Tominator
Re: Computer suggestion We got a new HP last year William. You can get a pretty powerful machine for $800 these days.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Computer suggestion Yep, $800 should be plenty. Make sure you get at least 1 GB of memory and if you're planning to store a bunch of pics, go with a larger sized hard drive - say 120 GB or so. The rest of it should fall into place nicely. I like Dell and you can get a 4 year in home warranty on some models. That will cost about $200 more but I think it's money well spent. arrow32
Re: Computer suggestion We got a new HP last year also and its great. With that 800 bucks you could get you one fine computer.
LifeNRA
Re: Computer suggestion I have a Gateway and have had not one problem with it! I guess you find a lemon in everything. But I only ever used thier customer support two times, first time was great! Second time was bad, but I cant complain about this machine. I think next machine will be a Dell though. Strut10
Re: Computer suggestion This Dell is 5 years old and has been running 15 hours a day since then. Never had any problems with the machine at all. I do know that one of the nation's major computer retailers sends a pile of Compaq rejects back on a fairly regular basis. I pick them up at the back door and put them into my UPS truck. When I upgrade, I won't look at anything but a Dell.
Newarcher
Re: Computer suggestion My personal opinion....go for a Dell or Gateway and stay away from Compaq. World's second worse customer service...next to Sears and their stuff is made from really cheap components. New

wtnhunt
Re: Computer suggestion Arent HP and compaq now made by the same company? One of the hp models I have been looking at has a 200 gb hard drive and 1 gb of memory, has the amd athlon 3800 processor. The dells seem to be priced somewhat comparably and have intel pentium processors.
VermontHunter
Re: Computer suggestion [ QUOTE ] Arent HP and compaq now made by the same company? [/ QUOTE ] They most definately are one and the same.... Go DELL,, and as most have recommened get plenty of Memory and Hard-Drive space... $800.00 will get one butt kicking maching.. One other suggestion, since you seem to like you icture editing I would suggest a good video card... If you call Dell they will walk you through whats available for your needs... Guest HaDeRonDa
Re: Computer suggestion Yikes!! that was a novel. Good job Vermonthunter. I have both a Dell desktop, Dell laptop and a homemade jobbie that I put together with. Can you say Dell? I've owned just about everything on the market in the past. M00N
Re: Computer suggestion I've owned Toshibas, Compaqs, HPs, Dells, and Alienwares. Out of all of them I find the Alienwares to be #1 on service/support and computer stability. They are a bit pricey though and geared towards gaming, but work well with other functions also. Mine gets used for web/graphic design, gaming, and word processing. My list of best companies to worst are the following: [*]Alienware [*]Dell [*]Gateway [*]HP [*]Compaq (HP's lower-end computer line) [*]Toshiba
wtnhunt
Re: Computer suggestion Thanks for all the suggestions. The dell E310 has actually been one of my considerations, and I am between that and the hp. Looked at a dell at Sams club that was pretty close to what you listed there vermont. Thanks again for all the suggestions.
