VTbowman
Went out yesterday morning in the misty rain and have been hunting out of my box stand the past 2 days because of foul weather. Been seeing a bunch of doe running around in the mornings and figured a buck would be following one of these times.. I decided to go way on top of the ridge line for my afternoon hunt seeing 10 doe run up into my woods that morning. I got on stand late since it took forever to stalk in quietly and then climb the ridge in the most straight line direction. I was in my tree lougne at 1:30. About an hour later I started to get sleepy, (dang thing), so I decide to stand up and face the tree to watch my back property line. This is the same stand that some butt plug hung a stand 80 yards behind it, right on the property line, with intent to hunt both sides of the fence. I see "dark brown" troting threw the woods about 100 yards away along my side of my fence. I try to check in out with the bino and could not see the head. Finally in went threw and "thin" spot and I saw it was a doe but man she looked dogged. Panting wide open mouth and troting with her tail sticking straight up. I stopped her with a mouth grunt and she did stop for .2345 seconds and continued on her way. 2 mintues later I see this guy following with his nose to the ground. But he was on my side, then their side, and back to my side. (Old barded wire fence that down in 80% of the boarder) Well I scoped him and went he stepped back on my side I let him have it in the high shoulder with my Rem. 300 U.M. I was looking for a "just dropped him" shot so I would not have to track onto the other property. Thats what I got!!!! He dropped 3 feet on my side and the irony is it was 10 yards from that guys stand. Now I normally have a strict "No Gut Pile" rule on my property but this day I decide to leave it. Right under his stand. LOL JUSTICE says I!!! Thinking back on it, and I told the game warden this too, that I should of hung the "male anatomy" right on his climber, but I think he will get the picture anyways... He is a 4 point, 123 lbs field dressed. One tine tip broke off went he dropped but you still see he is a full 4 pointer.
HuntingInMaine
Re: VT has one less 4 pointer.... Congratulations on the deer! I do have a question about your "no gut pile" rule though....what do you do with it??? I always thought that scavengers pretty much took care of it over night (at least in our area they do...) VTbowman
Re: VT has one less 4 pointer.... We normally load up our deer and field dress them at home in my front field and then have access to the hose quicker to wash it out. I like to field dress deer right on my open tail gate using tie down straps to help hold "open" the deer for easy cutting. Like a big mobile cutting board... LOL Plus I can watch the gut piles for coy-dogs from the house and pop them too. Haven't gotten one yet this way but the piles are pretty much gone in a day or two... At night mostly... I am just trying to discourage coy-dogs from roming my hunting property and chasing the deer. Its bad enough without the scent of a nice warm gut pile to lure them on the property.
