AJ
I have shot them with the .308 Winchester loaded with 165 gr Hornady SP and Nosler Ballistic Tips. It left a decent hole but that is to be expected using that big of a cartridge. You could use 180 or 200 gr bullets to reduce the damgage to the hide. If you want to have minimal damage and save pelts, get a .223 Rem or .17 Remington.
AJ
Re: 30-06 Coyote Load I have shot the Accelerator in more than a few 30-06 guns and the best I was able to obtain was about a 8"-10" group at 100 yards. Its junk. As far as the 110 gr loads, when they frag on impact, it creates a 4"-6" hole in the hide. Is that what you want? Use deer loads, they will damage less. Jeramie
Re: 30-06 Coyote Load I agree with Aj. If you're pushing 180grn + you wont get great expansion on a yote. They're made for much thicker skinned animals. The projectile will keep most of its shape, leaving a small hole, unless you contact bone. Jeramie
Re: 30-06 Coyote Load Yep, pretty much the same thing. Of course the 180+grn bullets are made to expand but wont if there isn't enough impact. The FMJ is the same way. They will just blow through an animal leaving little damage. Bad, bad idea for deer. In fact they're illegal to hunt with in Okieland.
fisherguy
Re: 30-06 Coyote Load My uncle gave me 5 boxes of those 55 grain remingto accelerators. From a vice they group 3.5 inches at 100 yards, so for me shooting that means closer to 5 or 6 inches. I think they will just be used for target practice. AJ
Re: 30-06 Coyote Load [ QUOTE ] Just wondering then how the larger bullet that your saying to use won't open up is better then a FMJ? [/ QUOTE ] Heavier bullets do less damage than lighter bullets of the same style, when all the bullets exit. The heavier bullets are going slower. A spire point 180 or 200 gr bullet will expand a little on a coyote but not like it will on a deer. A 150 gr bullet will expand more as it is going faster and the shock will be more. A round nose bullet will open more as the exposed lead tip is a lot bigger than the spire point. Forget energy and all that. The 30-06 has more than enough to take a coyote at distances farther than most shooters can even come close to hitting. A FMJ will do very little damage but it is also more prone to ricochet when you miss por the bullet passes through the target. A soft point will deform and dump a lot of its energy and momentum.
