snapper
Re: I wonder if he will start wearing a helmet? Ok...first of all...Ben is already out of the hospital and will be fine! I was more concerned for Ben than the Steelers...who really cares about a "game" when we are talking about a young man's health? Second, Pa doesn't have a helment law (good thing in my mind) and their shouldn't be a seat belt law either IMO. Should be mine or your choice to wear one if you choose. Third, in Pa, you don't need a bike lic. to ride a bike. All you need is a valid driver lic. and a bike permit. Only thing the bike lic. allows you to do that the permit don't...can ride a passenger and ride at night with a lic. Since Ben didn't have a passenger and was during the day time...he wasn't breaking any laws that I know of! Now laws change every day...so I could be wrong. Ben will start the season...muggs, don't take the bet!!!!!

Also, the Allegheny Co. sheriff said today that if you are only on a permit and never actually pursue your motorcycle license, then you HAVE to wear a helmet, regardless what the law says. So basically the actual motorcycle license allows you to drive at night, take a passanger and drive without a helmet.

[ QUOTE ] the Allegheny Co. sheriff said today that if you are only on a permit and never actually pursue your motorcycle license [/ QUOTE ] How long do you have to "pursue" that lic.? BTW Jim...yours/mine/and everyone elses insurance is based off what "you" drive. Your rate shouldn't change because of someone else's accident. If it does...then its your insurance company thats robbing you and using it as an excuse. My auto insurance is a % of the value of the auto's...not because someone was or wasn't wearing a seatbelt! Also...I wear my seatbelt...not because its the law...but because I'm used to wearing it and feels wrong without it on. I hate it when local, state, and federal gov. tells me what I can and can't do when it doesn't really affect other people...it should be my decision. Look at Ben's accident...the woman driving the car didn't get hurt more or less because of Ben not wearing a helmet! Sorry, just don't feel calling someone dumb for doing something within the law that was his choice...fair. Only thing I see that he did dumb was letting the permit expire. [/ QUOTE ] I agree to an extent, it's difficult to legislate morality, but you're mistaken if you think it doesn't affect others, it does when you take into consideration the resources it takes to put people back together not to mention the police, rescue, courts, etc. all resources that could be better served if people are more safe. Oh, and I think more than a few actuaries would have a problem with your insurance rate comments too.
snapper
Re: I wonder if he will start wearing a helmet? Chris...I would agree with the costs of doctors, police, courts etc...but, they pass these kinds of laws (using the cost as an excuse) and nothing changes. Is insurance any cheaper since the seatbelt law? Health ins. any cheaper...costs to run and maintain police dept. etc etc... These "costs" don't go down no matter what law they pass. They find other things to "need" the money for...then pass more legislation.
JJL
Re: I wonder if he will start wearing a helmet? The new laws never have the intention of lowering costs/rates. Their sole purpose is to try and keep cost/rates from going up. Insurance companies are going to get their money no matter what. We get to pay for it, part of life. There is no law anywhere that requires a person in a treestand to wear a safety harness. But, most of us wear them. Why????? In case of an unforseen occurance it could save our life. Law or no law..........Why would someone operate a motorcycle without a helmet?????????? I'm too cool........... It messes up my hair........... It's uncomfortable.......... snapper
Re: I wonder if he will start wearing a helmet? So we can agree that the "laws" are just wrong? The woman was at fault for the accident...so even a "license" rider who may or may not had on a helmet would still be in the crash. So what difference does this law make? robk
Re: I wonder if he will start wearing a helmet? what i would really like to know is when are people going to be more cognisant of bikers. everyone is screaming about his helmet of lack of when the truth is that old woman never bothered to look and see if anyone was coming and she turned into him. instead of will he wear a helmet how about people in cars and trucks watch for bikers and quit turning into them and old folks need to take a test every year to see if they are capable of driving safely and are aware of their surroundings and are able to watxh for motorcycles as well as other cars or other vehicles on the road\ rob k
spyderpancake
Re: I wonder if he will start wearing a helmet? I completely agree Rob. I heard that the lady said she saw him but thought she could beat him. I have been driving a bike for a little over a month now and have seen this several times, and had to grab the brakes a couple of times. People are so stupid when it comes to motorcycles, they think their SUV always has the right of way...
