Re: prairy dog hunting

All are long range guns and are plenty "Bad" enough for a PD. Three in particular stand out to me for different reasons.

* .22/250 is a bad lad. They have been around for longer then anyone can remember. Fast, flat, etc. They are even legal to hunt deer with in Oklahoma. Personally I think they are to small for any large game but to each his own. They are bad on yotes too.

* .223 may not shoot as flat as others but they should never be overlooked. Personally I love the .223 and when it comes to plinking its hard to be the price for a long range Cartridge. Again, even these are legal for Deer in Okieland but I feel they are to small.

* Another option, .243. By no means are they to large for Varmit. I just bought my first roughly 6-8 months ago. Loaded with a varmit round they are bad and can reach out there. Move up to a 100grn round and you can smoke deer to 300 yds.

Personally I would stick with anything that would get the job done the cheapest. I know people have a love for the Wildcat cartridges but not for me. The only way I would consider it would be to handload. Finding 221 fireball rounds around here is like a needle in a haystack. When you do find em your wallet is going to suffer. Thats just not something im willing to undertake when so many adequate cartridges are out there for a lot less money...

just my .02

For explosive results the .22-250 is great! V-max bullets put on quite an impressive show. For me that's kind of the point of hunting the little devils.

.223 is awesome if you are on a budget, I have a .223 but have never shot p-dawgs with it as I have the .22-250 and I handload.

If you are a handloader the .22-250 would be a tough one to beat, also does great on coyotes, but be careful with your bullet selection if you are after pelts, soft points and v-maxs tear 'em up BAD.

I can't speak to the .221 fireball as I don't have one and have never shot one. That sounds like a handloader for sure!

Have fun!

Re: prairy dog hunting

I go PD hunting every year with my grandpa in South Dakota. I have an H&R Handi-Rifle in .223 with a bull barrel. Gun was only $200 and it can reach out and touch'em. I buy the cheapest non-Russian shells I can (they wont eject) in HP and it rips'em to shreds. I usually dont step off my shots but I have shot some at around 500yds. I shot one standing at 350yds. Not to bad for a cheap gun. JMO

Re: prairy dog hunting

Check out the .204. Fastest factory-loaded cartridge on the market.

If you're wanting a cheap gun to shoot.....223 without question. One downside to the .204 is burning up your barrel. They say to cool your gun down after 3 shots, and I hear that in a good PD town, you'll be missing out on some dogs if you're waiting on your gun to cool off.

My personal preference would be the .223 for several reasons-

1- fast, but not so fast you'll burn up your barrel

2- cheap to shoot and ammo available at any place that sells ammo

3- minimal recoil so you can shoot all day long without flinching

I reall like the .22-250, but it is a little more expensive to shoot than the .223, but on the plus side is is flatter shooting. Now your wallet will have to make the final decision.....
