buck growl

Has anyone seen or read anything about this?

The new North american Whitetail has an article in it about Mark Drury and others having gotten this on video. And now he has created a call. And seemed to have good success with it last year. Now its on the market to buy.

Whats your guys thoughts? Has anyone seen any of this video of it? Or bought the call?

Re: buck growl

I have a movie by drury outdoors called whitetail madness 9 and 8 in both the movies it shows actual bucks growling and in 9 mark drury shoots a nice buck by growling at him to bring him in. It looks great and I am going to try it out. In 9 they go more into depth about the call and how they came across this new grunt/growl. awsome footage though.

i read that article in North American Whitetail..its seems pretty interesting. I'm thinkin about buying that call just to see what happens with it in the deer woods.

Re: buck growl

Yea,I read the article too.It is pretty interesting.I've never heard a buck growl, but I have heard bucks make other vocalizations that I've not heard on videos or through calls.

I've heard on more than one occation a buck sound like it was coughing up a fur ball while working over a scrape and another buck come charging in after it.

A few things in the article seemed a little fishy to me,but we'll see if it's all it's cracked up to be this fall.If I here a few success stories from regular joe hunters I'll probably invest in one.

Re: buck growl

Aren't they the guys who marketed the "hyper sonic" locator turkey call? smirk.gif

I'm a skeptic as of now.

Think about all the hunters out in the woods, all the cameras, all the hours logged, and all of a sudden, the Drurys "invent" this new sound?

This doubting Thomas needs more proof I guess. Maybe my buddy muggs will get one. I hear you get a free cough suppressor with each purchase.

Re: buck growl

I kinda agree with you Chris.I don't doubt that a buck would make the vocalization, but I wonder if it's as big a deal as they make it out to be.I think the article said they had never heard it before and all of the sudden they here it two weeks in a row in different states?I just need a wee bit more proof.

Re: buck growl

Now that I've seen the footage and heard what they are talking about I have heard this sound from a buck before but thought of it more as an aggressive drawn out grunt rather than something extra special. I think you can probably reproduce this same call with a grunt tube rather than buying a new call.

Well that sound certainly is a "big deal" - if you're trying to sell calls. wink.gif

Count me in the skeptic camp with you guys for now.

Re: buck growl

I heard two bucks making those sounds about 5 or 6 years ago while they were fighting about 20 feet away from me and since then I have been waiting to hear those sounds on a hunting video somewhere. When I heard them, it was in early October and there was not a doe in sight. I also heard them make a couple other sounds that I still have never heard anywhere else, but that's a different story.

It's pretty neat to hear that again. I am also a little skeptical about it's use as a call because it is obviously not a very common sound, but I'd be curious to experiment with it.

Re: buck growl

I hear it several times every year during the rut, but I never really thought of it as a separate, distinct vocalization. I always assumed it was just a long drawn out grunt from a really excited oversexed buck. I'm betting that you won't hear that sound unless you're in an area that has a good buck to doe ratio. Just like rattling - it works great in some places and is totally useless in others.

I'll have to experiment with my grunt tube and see if I can reproduce it. If I can't I'll probably order one and try it.

Re: buck growl

I just received my Mad growl call in mail yesterday.

I got to play with it a little last night and watch the DVD that comes with it.

First I have to say that the construction of this call is 1st class. It is put together very nice. The injection molded pieces have all the parting lines polished up and at first glance you'd think it is a turned call.

Second, the thing can grunt nicely. Better than any grunt call I've ever used (yep better than the legendary True Talker which I've never bee a fan of).

Third, the growl is a pretty cool sound and is easy to make. How it works on an Indiana whitetail though will have to be determined this fall.

The DVD is good. There are several amazing scenes of real bucks grunting (the best one is not even Drury footage, it is by a KY hunter), a couple scenes of Mark calling in a buck using the growl. Then a good "how to" session.

All in all, I'm pumped about trying out this call in late October to early November.

I heard a buck make a sound like that once. But it was my first year bow hunting and I shot it in the leg.

I bet he growled a lot after you shot him in the leg.

Shot off the front left leg of a Doe one year and she did the same thing when I walked up to her.

She was Agitated to say the least...for a few more seconds that is wink.gif
