but if he is the buck from last year, he should be better than an 8pt, right?

Not necessarily. The number of points a buck has when fully mature is due to genetics mainly.

It used to be an old wives tale that deer grew a new point every year. NOT SO, and not even close.

If he is a genetic 8 pointer, that is all he will ever be, but each year up until his prime, he will just continue to be a bit bigger and more impressive 8 pointer, based on the food he eats.

We have a lot of genetic 2x2's around here. We try to let them grow to be at least 3 years old before shooting them, just to make sure that they are true genetic 2x2's and will never grow any more tines.

They do get pretty impressive looking as they grow old, but they are still just 2x2's.

No matter how many points its obvious hes going to be an impressive deer. It'd be cool to get many more pictures of him growing and then a final one with him in the back of your truck.

Re: Oh my.. he\'s grown.

He was back last night. He is now an eight pointer and still has plenty of more time to grow. His brow tines are still uneven but his body is huge!! The other two bucks he hangs with are looking good as well. The next biggest is also an eight pointer, but very wide. Wider than the big guy. And the other one is getting extremely wide as well and it looks like he's trying to put on some G2's but he doesn't have browtines, so can I call them G2's?

Re: Oh my.. he\'s grown.

William, nope. We didn't get any more pics because we keep swapping the SD card out of the trail cam and into the digital camera. For some reason, my brother took the digital camera out of the bag at our cabin upstate and never put it back. Therefore, we left the camera there and the SD card. So until maybe next weekend we can't get any more pics. Unless we go buy another SD which looks like what we might have to do.

Re: Oh my.. he\'s grown.

Can definitely not have too many cards Joe, think I am going to pick up a couple more, think I might want a high speed for my minolta dslr though. Wal mart had several standard speed compact flash and sd cards on clearance here recentlly after putting out the new high speed cards on the shelf. One gb kodak brand compact flash cards were marked down to only $49, I started to grab two of them, but didnt.
