Buck of a lifetime for me in Kansas

I'm finally home from the bow hunt of a lifetime in Kansas. I was hunting on a self guided (do it yourself) hunt on private property. With topo and aerial photo in hand I focused in on a very promising looking spot to scout that turned out to be the magic spot. After seeing good buck sign and and group of trails that criss crossed through a small area I hung my 1st stand. On the 2nd day of actual hunting I decided I would spend all my hunting time on that stand. That morning I saw 3 bucks but none big enough for what I was looking for in Kansas. That afternoon after passing up a 120 class 8 point a 1 year old buck came in east of me around 4:00 pm. While I was watching him I caught movement to the west and this monster suddenly appeared. Needless to say he had me sucking air looking like this. shocked.gif I eased my bow off my RT bow hanger and waited for what I thought was going to be an up close chip shot. When he reached a fork in the trail he took the left fork leaving me looking for a hole to shoot through. He finally offered me a small hole through some limbs with about a 30 yard shot. I turned the 1st arrow loose (yep I said the 1st one) and to my shock I hit him square in the right ham. I didn't know it at the time but that Montec G5 went through and broke his left leg too. He stumbled and then began slowly walking off. I quickly knocked another arrow and came to full draw looking for another shot opportunity. Without a doubt the fear of blowing and opportunity like this and having a wounded monster buck on my hands was certainly on my mind. Walking away from me he finally gave me another small opening and I let the 2nd arrow fly. He immediately crashing to the ground and began thrashing around. I thought for sure he would expire right there so I eased my digital camera out of my pocket and snapped a pic. That's when I found out he wasn't quite done yet. He had thrahed around to face back toward the west and began crawling off. After a few moments of indecision and realizing that I wouldn't have another shot opportunity from the stand I lowered my bow and came out of that tree like a cat squirrel. I eased around toward him crawling away toward the direction he came from. At about 5 yards I put he quick, humane end to his suffering. That's when I finally got the shakes big time as I continuously side stepped around this buck with my hands on my head in disbelief over the size of this buck. As it turned out the 1st arrow would have done the job. because it took out the arteries in both of his hind legs.

I green scored him the following morning only then realizing he was really a Boone and Crockett class buck. He grossed in the mid 180's B&C and netted around 177 1/2 B&C. I'll know for sure 60 days from November 20th. To give you some perspective the right G4 is an even 10" long. The G2 and G3 on the right side are both 12+ inches. His shortest up tine was the G4 on the left side that had the end broken off. It was still 7 5/8" long. Both main beams are over 26".

Once again, thank you Lord for sending this buck of a lifetime my way.

Re: Buck of a lifetime for me in Kansas

Thanks everybody. I had to go show him to a lot of people at our hunting camp here in MS or I was threatened with being skinned alive. He's at the taxidermist now. Sounds like it won't be long before I get him back. There aren't too many heads in front of me. I'm doing a shoulder mount on a 19"x 24" arrowhead plack. With that definative bronze forehead he will make a striking mount.

The guy that has done most of my mounts has also done most of the work for this state's natural history museum. Even with his reputation and talent he is not as expensive as others I hear about but higher than average down here. This one will cost me about $500 since I chose a particularly expensive plack as far as placks go.
