I do think that you're right when you say that the oldline leadership of Communist China is still hostile to the U.S., but there are events unfolding in China that may be beyond their control. Namely a growing middle class and a booming capitalist economy. Communism requires a large peasant (basically slave) class to survive, while capitalism requires a strong middle class.
