wtnhunt
Heard on the today show this morning about a high school graduate (valedictorian of her class) who had the mic cut on her during her speech because she was going to talk about God in her life and how the Lord helped her through her tough times. This took place in Nevada where the school had edited her speech and warned her not to bring this up. Her freedoms of speech were violated and from what I gather from what I caught of the interview her parents are very insistent on pushing forward with a suit. Maybe this will have the right outcome and will start a trend.
Guest Andrea
Re: Interesting-anyone else hear this story Yeah, I watched that too this morning. Back when I was in the 10th grade...........the announcer at the high school football games would say a prayer before each game ( over the loudspeaker). Well, a jewish girl took offense to that, took the school to court and now we cannot say prayer aloud before games ( or any other time during school). I hope this valedictorian's parents win their lawsuit. Should be interesting. Obviously they will bring up separation of church and state, freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Regardless of the outcome......................God will win in the end.

muggs
Re: Interesting-anyone else hear this story I remember the days when someone got offended and just lived with it. HG- if I went to a school that was a mostly Jewish student body, I wouldn't be surprised, or offended if they said a Jewish prayer. But that's just me...besides all that, I thought this Country was founded on a majority rules basis, shouldn't issue like this be voted on? ParrotHead
Re: Interesting-anyone else hear this story There was a vote taken, long about 1776 and a declaration was written and a bill of rights also. I do have to wonder though - if the kid were speaking of any other religion other than Christianity - if the plug would have been pulled??? Guest fishermanwhohunts
Re: Interesting-anyone else hear this story Theres a reason they call it separation of CHURCH and State. They teach people in shcool to celebrate diversity. So because Christianity teaches that Jesus is the only way (which I belive), they kick that out of school. For example, In our World History textbook, the Christianity section is worded with phrases like, supposedly..., Christianity teaches..., etc. Phrases that made it seem like superstition, falsifications and the like. All the other religions were worded as if they were real. I belive a non-Christian would be able to notice things like that. Subtle things like that are why you must dawn the Full Armor of God. I am glad I live in a small town school that truly understand our freedoms and let us express Christian beliefs and not just beliefs of multi directional religions. wtnhunt
Re: Interesting-anyone else hear this story Anyone who did not want to hear or was offended had the right not to listen period. Pulling the plug on her was a violation of her rights. Like you ph, gotta wonder and willing to bet if it were any other religion they would have let it go. It seems like these days any "religion" except Christianity is accepted and encouraged.
doughboy1956
Re: Interesting-anyone else hear this story Never heard about it until now. I hope her parents win the case because this is getting away out of hand in the world. Thanks for sharing.

[/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Pulling the plug on her was a violation of her rights [/ QUOTE ] Ill play the other side for a minute just for fun Seriously, if she had been warned not to bring it up, her speech had been edited, and she was aware it was against school policy, the the school was probably well within its legal right to pull the plug on her. That doesnt make it right, but it will probably lose the family thier lawsuit. On the other hand if someone were getting on the podium and crediting Devil worship with helping them through high school a lotta people in here wouldnt be so quick to jump on the free speech bandwagon and defend them, even though they can both be considered religions.Anyway, just another way to look at it, I really mean nothing by these statements, just trying to understand both sides here. wtnhunt
Re: Interesting-anyone else hear this story Sadly enough if that were the case Chris, the school in this day and age probably would have let it go knowing the aclu would fight for those sick twisted views. horst
Re: Interesting-anyone else hear this story Oh I totally understand what your saying William and your more than likely right. But its a case of danged if you do and danged if you dont.If they pull the plug this girl and her family file a lawsuit, if they dont and someone else gets offended the ACLU and thier lawyers get involved.Im not saying they made the right choice, but like i said, they warned the girl first so they should have pretty well covered thier bases.Put yourself in the school boards shoes for a second and you gotta admitt, there are no good choices anymore for them to make , whatever they do someones gonna be upset.Im actually in agreement with you on what they shoulda done, but faced with the choices they had i might have done the same thing depending on a lotta factors within the school itself. wtnhunt
Re: Interesting-anyone else hear this story Yeah, you make a valid argument about the school covering their bases. A true shame that they even have to consider something like that.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Interesting-anyone else hear this story Yep, there's well established legal precedent that the 1st Amendment right to free speech does not extend into the classroom. However, it was still a decision by the school's "powers that be" to cut off the speech, and I think that it was a poor decision.

Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Interesting-anyone else hear this story I would guess so, since it's a school sponsered function and especially if it's being held on school property. But I'm not an attorney, I don't play one on TV, and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, so I could be wrong...
Guest fishermanwhohunts
Re: Interesting-anyone else hear this story The reason things like these happen and are let go is because no one is honest anymore. If you asked the people who had her speech edited and had cut her off if they would let someone else express belief in another "religion" aside from Christianity. They would say they would not let them. But someone could decide to make a speech expressing their belief in this other "religion" (cough(cult)) and the person who edited the Chritian's speech would let this other speech fly.
