VTbowman
I just seeded my 1st food plot with some Hamme Farms trefoil/clover mix. His Growers Blend I believe. (Its the plot I have pics of in my other post recently.) Its roughly a bit less then 1/2 acres worth of ground and I had a bag that was suppose to plant 1 acres worth. The seed was very small and I had a hard time getting the feed setting right on my hand broadcaster and I used the entire bag... Can you over seed an area or is it a good thing to choke out weeds? VermontHunter
Re: Can you over seed? LOL... I'm not sure on that one Shawn... Should be one thick plot tho....
VTbowman
Re: Can you over seed? Man I swear that seed was like water in that broadcaster! LOL Thankfully I started under and in front of the stand so if some areas were not seeded as well then its not where I can shoot at. VermontHunter
Re: Can you over seed? You should be fine Shawn....you'd be suprised where these seeds covered as the were being broadcasted....
VTbowman
Re: Can you over seed? Well I was a bit disappointed as I wanted to only use 1/2 the bag here and the other 1/2 for the control burned food plot. Looks like I need more seed now... VermontHunter
Re: Can you over seed? Sounds like an opertune time to throw in some winter rye,,, and it's not bad on the wallet either... or maybe mix in some Chufa for the Turkeys also... dogdoc
Re: Can you over seed? don't worry about it---putting out that extra seed won't hurt a thing. There are some plants that will suffer when too much seed is used--I don't think the perennials which will produce lots of seed when flowering are one of those. You should be fine. Should come in nice and thick--and if the soil is real fertile then your plot will handle the browsing pressure even better. todd
VTbowman
Re: Can you over seed? [ QUOTE ] There are some plants that will suffer when too much seed is used [/ QUOTE ] I have heard this before thats why I asked. not that I could do much about it now. LOL I figured the 3 brands of clover would be ok, but I have never dealt with trefoil before and know very little about it. I dont even know what it looks like yet. LOL The soil is quite dark and rich looking and the area gets a good bit of sun throughout the day. It should grow well in there and I am very excited about this plot since its right in a transition area for deer to enter the bigger feilds. Its also an enclosed area and they should feel safe while eating. That is until the feel an arrow pass threw their lungs. LOL Thanks! RangerClay
Re: Can you over seed? Personally I try to over seed a little in case of an unplanned natural disaster. I remember a few years ago I spread a blend of seeds. Came back to check on it the next day and most of the seeds were gone. After some investigation I found that the turkeys ate most of it When I plant clover I try to over seed more than a little. I personally like the results. bigbuckdown70
Re: Can you over seed? you can over seed but for food plots its not that big of deal it just can get a little pricy if you overseed a big plot
