VTbowman
I have an area that is fairly wet and has a bunch of golden rod and ferns growing in there now. I did a control burn earlier this year, and recently sprayed it with round-up; about 8 days ago. Its should be ready to roll over in a week or so but its really wet in there with all the rain VT has been getting this spring/summer. I am not sure how wet it is normally but my guess is fairly wet since it was never used for a hay field even though it butts up against one and sits between 2 others... I am looking for a seed that will draw deer to it in Novemeber and December time frame up in Vermont and can handle wetter soil during the summer and early fall months. Sounds like a tall order-huh. Thanks
dogdoc
Re: Need advice on what seed to use next.... Here are a few food plots choices that will handle wet poorly drained soil: Alsike Clover White Dutch Clover Birdsfoot trefoil American Jointvetch Japanese Millet dwarf essex rape If it was me I'd plant a mix of alsike clover, trefoil, white dutch clover, and rape. todd

[/ QUOTE ] Think aside from the rape seed, that is part of what is in his grower blend. For a fall planting also probably wouldnt hurt to use some winter rye mixed in. dogdoc
Re: Need advice on what seed to use next.... This is Martin's Fall Deer Blend. I think it would work for you: "A select blend of Norcen Trefoil, DCS Wildlife Rape, Turnip, Chicory, Winter Rye, Ladino Clover, Alsike Clover and White Dutch Clover to produce a very lush and high protein green field." bigbuckdown70
Re: Need advice on what seed to use next.... what about a rape and turnup mixture turnups are a good place to find sheds also rape works good after the first good frost brings out the sweetness
wtnhunt
Re: Need advice on what seed to use next.... Will probably be planting some of that same fall mix here this fall. Hey Todd, can that seed be broadcast over an existing plot(our pea and sorghum plot) like just before a rain without reworking the soil? VTbowman
Re: Need advice on what seed to use next.... Not to sound to lazy but I need a perenial not an annual. I dont wanna be doing this every dang spring and summer. LOL I am justy going to get eh Growers Blend since its a clover and trefoil mix like I already have planted. wtnhunt
Re: Need advice on what seed to use next.... Some of the seed in that blend if I am not mistaken are in fact perenials. The grower mix is a good choice, you can always add some brassicas and some rye to that mix if you wanted to. After the annuals die out, you will still have your perenial. dogdoc
Re: Need advice on what seed to use next.... wtn--I think you'd be fine just overseeding the fall mix in the peas--especially if you do it right before a good rain. VT--the fall blend is a perennial but personally the annuals are easier to do than perennials. You'd think that perennials are easier but in fact they take more work to maintain. Between fertilizing 3 times a year and mowing 2 to 3 times a year it actually becomes more work. When I plant annuals I plant, fertilize, and forget. todd

Once I plant these 2 plots thats it for me! LOL No fert-no replant, maybe a mowing come late summer.. But after that I am done with it. I like low to no maintenance plots. I already have 40+ acres of clover, alfalfa, and rye panted by a local farmer, cut 3x per summer so food plots almost seem unneccesary IMO. Its all a few years old now so not as "sweet" as it once was but the deer still flock to these fields. I have hunted deer out there for 8 years and never needed plots to draw them in or provide for them. I just wanted to try something new and give a little something different to snack on. The $$$ involved is more then I had planned up front and is not even over yet this summer. Thats with having the seed given to me! I am hoping to get a couple years out of these and then see what happens after that.
