It is a .270 Winchester because Winchester designed the cartridge. Other gun makers just chamber their guns in that cartridge. The .30-06 is a .30 caliber that was created in 1906. The 45-70 Government is a .45 caliber cartridge that was designed to hold 70 grains of black powder. The .270 Winchester was designed by Winchester as they necked down the 30-06 casing to accept .277" bullets.
