Swamphunter
When we first built our house we knew that we were going to be having town water supply ran through the area the following year. Seeing that we needed water, and the drilled wells in the area were bordering 200ft deep, we decied to go with a dug well for the one year. Now that we have town water, we want to fill in the dug well. I am going to drop whatever gravel and sand that I can inside the well, but here is my question. The well is approximately 30 feet deep and the hole is about 24" wide. How many cubic yards of material would I need if say I purchased a load of sand or gravel to fill this hole and be done with it. Thanks
tedicast
Re: Any mathmatics wizards?? I'm not a math wizard swampy, but I figured the volume, and came out with just a tick under 14 yards. I'm pretty sure this is correct.

Guest woodsnwater
Re: Any mathmatics wizards?? Not sure on the materials needed but if the well is in good operable order & the codes allow, I would keep the well & use it for watering the lawn,Garden, & car washing. May save you a few bucks on the water bill.

wtnhunt
Re: Any mathmatics wizards?? Dont know about the idea of dumping in a well Ken. I may be way off on this, but it might be possible someone else could be tapped into the same (aquifer) stream of water. Might could possibly screw things up for them. Really not so sure how you would get what you are dumping not to float out anyways without somehow capping the bottom.

[/ QUOTE ] I could be wrong...High School was a long time ago...lol [/ QUOTE ] You ain't telling me anything...my 20 year reunion is this August!! I can barely divide let alone figuring this stuff out! For as far as keeping it, yeah it is with-in code, and yeah it can save me a few bucks watering the lawn (usually drought is not a problem in the 2 months of warm weather we get in NY. The issue is the hole is big enough and deep enough to lose a curious kid. I'll spend the bucks, fill the hole and have some piece of mind. Even though there is a cover on it...I think it is an accident waiting to happen.

[/ QUOTE ] It is not a drilled well, it is a DUG well....just a deep hole that is dug by a backhoe and then a pipe installed to the surface, backfilled, and then surface water collects in the pipe and is pumped to the house. Usually they are full of bacteria and need to be constantly treated. No one else will be affected as it is just a collection pipe for runoff water, that leeches into the pipe. tedicast
Re: Any mathmatics wizards?? Ok Swampy..I was wrong! You were correct, that was a lot...lol. I remembered the formula for volume of a cylinder. I just got radius, and diameter mixed up in my head. I did the formula using the diameter, which came out to 377 cubic feet. When I figured out my mistake, and did it with the proper radius it came out to 94.2 cubic feet. Which, divided by 27 to get the cubic yards, comes out to 3 1/2 cubic yards. Sorry about that, lol. Leo
Re: Any mathmatics wizards?? Tedi I think your answer is still twice as high as it needs to be. Volume for cylinder 1 ft radius 15ft long V=(pi*(radius^2))*length So Volume = (3.14*((1 ft)^2)*(15 ft) = 47.12 ft^3 convert to cubic yards 47.12/27 = 1.75 yd^3 I'd round it up to 2 cubic yards to account for settling and measurement error. It's been over 20yrs since highschool for me too and I have a brain injury but I'm pretty sure that's right

Sure am glad I didn't order 14 yards of something and have it dumped... I wonder how many shovel fulls of dirt from neighboring yards I would need to get in the middle of the night to come up with 2 cubic yards?? [/ QUOTE ] I still think you need at least 3 1/2 yards, as Leo figured the cylinder as 15 feet, and you stated the well is 30 feet. Oh man, this is all too much on my brain!!! Radius, Diameter..i couldn't keep this stuff straight in HS, never nind 22 years later...lol
Leo
Re: Any mathmatics wizards?? Yep he did, oops, sorry. That's where the brain injury thing comes in. Better get 4 cubic yards.
GWSmith
Re: Any mathmatics wizards?? Ken, The questions I have...Is it less expensive to keep this well and paying to have it securely closed/capped-off, or pay for the material to fill it in? Also...Why eliminate the resource? IMHO...Use whatever resources you have to their maximum potential.

How does my neighbor come into play with this?? It is my well, dug by a backhoe on my property. It is not anywheres near close to a neighbor.
