How much different with a 24inch barrel

I have a weatherby mark v in the 270 mag and I'm trying to find the ballastics chart that show the bullet drop. My gun is the "mountain" gun that has the shorter 24" barrel instead of the 26 that most of the weatherby mags are. I can find the charts for that size but not mine. How much of a difference do you think that makes?

Hey Aj I finally got a hold of someone at Weatherby that knew and he said a 60fps difference and that wouldn't make a noticable difference in bullet drop so i can use the same ballistic chart as they have for the 26" barrel Thanks.

That was an interesting thread, thanks. It looks like he agrees with what I heard from Weatherby which is not a noticable difference. from a 24 to a 26. I'm going on a Elk hunt (my first) and wanted to know the ranges of my gun or at least where they should be, while I pratice shooting farther.

Re: How much different with a 24inch barrel

Will you notice a difference in the field? Nope, but than again you will not really see a difference between a 308 Win and a 300 Win Mag either. At normal hunting distances, a couple hundred fps means little except recoil for the shooter.

The thread makes the statement that its not much different. That blanket statement is not true in every case. As the powder capacity to bore size ratio goes up, the slower burning powders that are used to make the higher velocity are not as efficient when the expansion chamber is too short. You have to understand internal ballistics more than just having a hacksaw and a long barrel. Say if you use a medium burn rate powder to get to a certain speed with a xx" barrel. If you reduce the barrel length a couple few inches, you can use a slightly faster burning powder and still be as efficient. Not necessarily the same speed, but similar velocity in xx" or XX+2" barrel. If you used the slowest burning powder, there is a bigger difference in the speeds.

You could probably find that the percentage of velocity loss is similar between the different cartridges, but the faster cartridges will have a larger number but the same percentage.

Re: How much different with a 24inch barrel

Mine came from the factory this way and with my muzzlebrake kick is not an issue but I know I will never have another one on any gun I own, the noise my gun makes is literally unbearable. I will take a kick over that anyday. I only use the weatherby rounds so the powder burn should be fine for this gun. I was just needing the ballistics for it. Myself I couldn't put a hacksaw to any of my guns but thats just me.
