shotupdeer
Anyone ever used one for deer? What about the .444 marlin? The more I read about big bores, the more I'd like to own one. I've heard they actually do less damage to meat than smaller, faster moving cartridges, but I've never seen two deer to compare.
JimT
Re: .45/70 If you do not reload, get the .450 Marlin if you want a big bore lever gun. Not many people have one. I had one and it shot good.

Jeramie
Re: .45/70 My cousin shoots a 45/70. Its like throwing a brick at them. They are devastating but really only at close range. Both carry roughly 1000ft/lbs of energy at 200yds. The .444 carries 1010 and the 45/70 carries 1001 but the fall on both is amazing! Especially the 45/70. At the 200 yard mark the .444 falls 5.4" when it is sighted at 2.2" at 100. The 45/70 falls 24" when it is sighted dead on at 100. Honestly I wouldn't shoot either over 100yds in any situation. If you connect within that 100yd mark you're doing some serious damage.
AJ
Re: .45/70 If you handload, the .45/70 is a wild cartridge! You can make as mild or as wild as you can imagine (within reason) and the cartridge will perform. I have shot deer with a Contender handgun in .45/70 and it did the job very well. Now I have a NEF Handi Rifle in .45/70 and I would not hesitate to use it to 200 yards on deer with my handloads.
