This is my new deer rifle. It is a 1970 winchester model 88. The 88 is like a lever crossed with a bolt action rifle. It has a detachable 4 round magazine that allows it to use more powerful cartridges, in this case, the .308 win. The lock-up of the action is more solid than other levers and rivals that of most bolts. It has a 3-lug , rotating, forward-locking bolt. The gun was made from 55-73 and the post-64 models had a cheesy checkering on the stock that has been removed on this customized, glass-bedded stock. There were less than 290,000 of these made in all variations. I am going to put a fixed 6 power scope on this rifle and use it for mule deer this fall. I have been told that it shoots 1.5 inch 100yd groups with open sights. I plan on shooting 150 gr bullets and any suggestions on type would be appreciated. I also have a 1975 rem 700 in 30-06 and a ruger 77 in .243, but this is my first lever.. I have never used a .308, but am excited to see how it shoots.

That is sharp.

As far as loads you cant go wrong with the corelokt. For the money they are a great round. Of course you need to check accuracy with different rounds but it they shoot straight out of your rifle, theyre deadly.

The .308 should shoot basically identical to your 06. It will have the same result on impact and as AJ says, the deer really doesnt care! smile.gif

The .308 is a good, accurate, flat shooting, hard hitting round! You should be good at long ranges!

Congrats. A new rifle is a thing of beauty!

A new gun is always good. A "new old gun" is even better!!! grin.gif You'll like the .308's performance on deer. I always thought the .308 probably stomped a deer flat faster than any other caliber I've shot them with. Enjoy your vintage Winchester. She looks like she's in really nice shape!!
