Does Early Season or late season?

Recommended Posts

Since this is a MANAGEMENT forum thought I would ask!

Would you rather harvest does at the begining of season or late in the season? Me personally I think I would rather do so early season before they are breed.

When do you think is the best time?

For proper management any time is a good time. However--if you think about it early season is the best time. If you harvest early then there are less does for the bucks to breed which means less stress on the bucks. Early season harvest also means less competition for available forage when winter hits and less food is available.

if there are tons of does then it wont hurt to take a chunk out of the population no matter what time of year. If there are so many does then cleary the buck to doe ratio is out of whack and killin a bunch of does wont hurt a thing. In certain areas folks wont shoot does because they want to hold out for a buck and the populations skyrocket out of control.

Todd hit it on the nose. Less stress on the bucks. But also less does come rut time means they have to move around a little more to find them.
