JimT
I am mz hunting starting monday and have a few quick questions. How long do you let a charge sit before you refresh it? Do you leave your mz sitting in the truck or do you bring it in after a days hunt? Do you cover the end of the barrell so no moisture gets in? Thanks
ScottyLuck
Re: Few Questions Jim, I'm also staring soon. I believe you can let the charge sit for the duration of the season providing you don't get any debris or such in the barrel. Yes, the end of the bbl can be covered and should be in foul weather. I've heard some people using balloons and some people used rubbers. You can buy covers in Cabela's. As for bringing it inside after the hunt it's probably not a good idea because the temp change could cause condensation in the bbl. Leave it in the truck or in the garage, if you have one. dogdoc
Re: Few Questions if its raining i usually do cover the barrel. I leave the charge in for a max of 3 days then shoot it out and reload before the next hunt. i also shoot a cap just prior to loading. i'll pass on the rubbers---i've always hated those darn things. good luck monday todd

lil hunter
Re: Few Questions well, i wouldn't recommend leaving it in a guncase in the truck or whatever, thats just askin for rust. Jim, if you shoot the gun, you should go ahead and clean it completely just like after shooting 20-50 rounds at the range. Just my suggestion. I need to unload and clean mine soon. The charge has been in there since Nov 13.

Guest bigbuckmiddaugh
Re: Few Questions I've left mine in all year I just lubed up the barrel. I don't really recomend that, lol. It did shoot the following year too. So, it was still dry. I think the reason is cause i HATED cleaning that gun. Had to take it all apart everytime. I just ordered a new muzzleloader, with break action. Which is very easy to clean. I will leave my load in all season, which is two weeks. Then the last day i will shoot it so i can clean the gun before storage.

[/ QUOTE ] How can it rust if ther's no temp change? [/ QUOTE ] Any moisture on the gun and/or case can cause it to rust. I believe oils from your skin can also cause rust.(i could be wrong on that one) If you spray your gun down with some remoil or something similiar, that will really help with the rust. But never let your gun sit for a while, after hunting, without oiling all metal parts.
too_pointer
Re: Few Questions JimT, Our season here is only 10 days. I don't know how long yours is.? Once I load mine it stays loaded till I fire it or end of season. I use balloons also, but only in wet weather, and take them off when you are done hunting for the day. I also use Rem. oil on the exterior of my gun, and it should not rust inside a gun case if kept in your garage, or somewhere where you don't have big tempt. changes. At least, mine never have. I don't bring it inside my house during that time. This has always worked for me. too_pointer

magnatecsteve
Re: Few Questions I judge when to shoot off mine by the weather conditions I have had it out hunting in. If it's raining or warmer humid days, I only leave it in a few days, unless it rained a good amount while hunting, then I'll shoot it off at the end of the days hunt. I find it ideal when it's pretty cold outside, hardly any humidity in the air. If I shoot it, I clean mine very well, mine are custom buildt by my Dad.. And I do wipe down the metal with an oiled cloth to keep the rust off, but I don't like a really smelly gun oil, spooks deer. The rubber balloon over the muzzle is a good idea, the trapped air will burst the balloon before the bullet gets even half way down the barrel, so no interference with the bullet. A good when it rains on your hunt is to tuck the lock/action part of the gun under your armpit to shield it from the rain.
