Ants!

Recommended Posts

When I went to retrieve my compact flash card from my Cuddeback today, I opened the camera and a ton of tiny black ants were crawling around inside in every single nook and cranny. Even in where the video card is. I'll bet I saw 200 ants. Very tiny though and they seemed to have tiny wing like things in there also. Will these ants hurt the camera or are they ant proof? I had absolutely zero blank images so I know they did not cause the camera to flash by walking in front of the sensor. Are these cause for concern?

Re: Ants!

swampy--i'd call or e-mail the company. I've had ants set up home on my LR but it is sealed well enough they have never been able to get inside. I'd take the camera home and get some canned air used to clean computers and clean the camera really well.

Next time you take it out take a little sevin dust with you and lightly dust the outside case with it--that is what I do now and it works great.

Re: Ants!

Ditto what Todd said Ken. If the ants are getting in, moisture could be getting in too, I would probably contact the company. Have had ant all over our cams, but have never had any on the inside of the leaf river. Did have a few in the stealth cam just a few times. Would think they will eventually cause problems.

Re: Ants!

yeah...i was wondering if they would cause problems but i dont know what they could do to cause a problem....there not going to eat any of the wires or anything to that nature...and even if they nested there it would hurt....but...i still dont wanna take the risk...i took my air compressor to them and blew out everything the best i could and left it outside for a couple hours with it open so they could crawl out and then i sprayed it with the air compressor again...i think i got rid of them...

Re: Ants!

wow, I just had the same problem with my Cuddeback 3.0 last weekend. I tried my best to get most of the ants out, but without any kind of air canister im sure there are still some left. Because my camera is an over an hour away i did not want to take it home to clean and miss 2 weeks of pictures. Im afraid of putting any kind of ant repellant on the camera because of the scent it would leave.

Any more suggestions are appreciated because i really would hate to have my camera not function due to pesky ants!

Re: Ants!

Like I said Ken, I would call cuddeback and see what they have to say. While the ants may be nothing more than a nuisance at this point and might not cause any damage to the cam, there is a good chance if the ants are getting in, moisture could be as well. Moisture in the cam could cause some serious damage.
