Re: WHICH SEMI -AUTO???

I just wanted to step into the remington debate..... I have an 870wingmaster 20 ga, its an awsome gun and i havnt had any problems with it, my dad got an 870 16 ga. this year and its a whole other story this last week alone it jammed three times on him, the shell release would go off early jamming the spent shell and one coming up in the chamber. Some will remember me posting about a 20 guage 1100 earlier this year, the gun had been shot maybe four times since it was bought in the mid 80's. I shot it and it wouldnt eject the spent shell/or run a shell up from the chamber, i took the gun apart and cleaned every square inch of the thing, put it back together as the manual stated problem still there, i figured i had put it back together wrong but after going back in i realized that it was nothing i had done, i replaced parts and on and on. thing still sitting in the back of the closet will not eject or cycle a shell. i carried a 1100 two trips ago in iowa because it had a full choke and the birds where getting up well ahead of us due too the warm temps, three times i pulled the trigger that trip to have the gun go click, took a look at the shell and the pin wasnt hardly touching it. as the day went on id say it prob 65% of gun actully going off and the gun going click. I also have to agree with stub on the matter of replacment parts...when you see replacment parts out on the shelves like candy one has to wonder. My gun smith says to stay away from the 11-87's as you'll spend more money on parts then ya will shells through it. Reming ton has had these guns out since when?? the late 70's and they still cant get it right...please, I'll save the money on parts and o-rings and whatever else and stick to my Montefeltro, heck ya hardly have to clean that thing once a season and she just keeps on going boom.

Thanks carbon, I believe you. I was stating my experiences with Rems, and it was positive. Yours wasn't. frown.gif I suppose if I ever replace some of them, I would consider other makes after some of the replies in here. The days of a decent , good priced, autoloader are over I guess. I had better keep mine since they don't give me problems crazy.gif

Re: WHICH SEMI -AUTO???

My dad has an 1100 and an 11-87. Both from the 80's I think. I don't remember ever seeing either of them jam. The only time we really clean any of our shotguns, is when we drop them in water.(to prevent any rust) other than that, they are just sprayed with RemOil, and put away. So Carbonhunter, apperently they have gotten it right.

Ha, thats funny Lil. Its different strokes for different folks. I use my 11-87 Super Mag for foul weather trap shooting, turkey hunting, and deer drive day. It has not oerated other than perfect once it was broken in.

Re: WHICH SEMI -AUTO???

Ha lil....I dont think i had seen a jam at the age of 13/14/15 either.....fine buy me little buddy, I'll spend a little more to never have that WHAT IF anyday of the week, I shoot competitive skeet, and the guys I shoot with have to clean there gas ports every 300 rounds or so. I could see using it as a trap gun as you only need one shot in that game anyway.

"The only time we really clean any of our shotguns, is when we drop them in water.(to prevent any rust) other than that, they are just sprayed with RemOil, and put away."

if youve never cleaned the gas ports and never seen a jam, or replaced an O-ring... and those guns where made in the 80's. Id wonder how much truth is in that statment.

When one of the oldest and most reputable gunsmiths in the country tells ya they havnt gotten it right.....you tend to believe it.

edit.....If they work for you thats just fine with me, but when you compair the prices they are no longer the "affordable" autoloader anymore, and for the quirks many of them have arnt worth it either. IMO

Re: WHICH SEMI -AUTO???

I've stayed out of this debate/suggestion thread because the original thread asked for suggestions on guns under $700.

I got a Benelli Montefeltro about 5 or 6 years ago, and have put probably 1,000 rounds through it since then. I got my first jam last week. The gun had been outside for 4 hours in temps approaching single digits. That night I cleaned it, and took it out the next day in the same kind of weather. I think Aaron (carbonhunter) will attest that it was cold here in central Ohio the week after Christmas, anyway, after that cleaning, it operated perfectly again.

I have two buddies who shoot 1100's. Both of them use they're guns for dove hunting. My one friend has to use high brass because his 1100 won't cycle the light loads, and my other buddy has had numerous non-cycling jams too. (it jammed on me one day when I borrowed it for deer season) I will say that both their guns are well over 25 years old.

Personally, I'd highly recommend a Benelli and stay away from the Remingon autos.

Just my $.02

Re: WHICH SEMI -AUTO???

the 935 is great for turkey and waterfowl. its what i use. only bad part is it wont shoot light loads like dove loads. in FACT mossberg says not to shoot any thing under 3 inch. also the 10 gage boar <DONT SHOOT SLUGS> slug barrels not made yet.
