VTbowman
I went to check on my plots today and was shocked to see how little growth I have so far in #1 and how not dead the other plot was after spraying almost 4 weeks ago with double strength round-up mix. I planted #1 on the 21st of last month and we have had plenty of rain and sun in the time since then. Maybe too much rain, but no wash outs or any soil erosion or anything like that. Just very little growth. I am wondering if its the seed since the seed has been sitting in my garage since last summer. (Hammes Farm-Growers Blend) I have sprouts of what I think is trefoil and I am seeing absolutely no clover yet. Does it seem like enough time has passed for clover to sprout too? I was going to take a pic of it but found out once I was already there that our camera was full and I did not know if the pics were downloaed yet. I did not want to erase any of my wifes pics of the kids. I will take some pics in another few days when I get some more time off but I am not happy so far with all the $$$ I have spent... dogdoc
Re: Not happy with plot(s) progress.... i think your seed is fine--heck I've got some 5 year old alfalfa seed that still germinates just fine. Give it a little more time and I'll think you'll be fine. The biggest failure for planting clover is burying the seeds too deep---(1/4 inch is about as deep as you want to go). I bet in another 2 weeks it will be up and running. Remember--the clover will germinate--then grow very slow. It's more concerned at this time about getting down a good root system before producing good forage. todd
wtnhunt
Re: Not happy with plot(s) progress.... Have to agree with Todd here. Bet your clovers are fine unless you did bury the seed too deep. My grower plot we planted it inthe spring late, really more like summer ad it was a bit slow to come on in comparison to the penn koted seeds from pennington which we planted in the fall, but it did come on in despite drought conditions here that summer. As far as your wet plot goes, the roundup may not work real well if it is staying too wet whhere you are spraying. Might have to up the concentration more than double, because it may be being diluted with the excessive moisture.
VTbowman
Re: Not happy with plot(s) progress.... Fairly sure its not planted to deep but what if it is? If its is it can't be mroe then an inch deep in spots. I dio have sproutiong so I tend to believe its all planted correctly. Maybe I was just expe3cting better growth over a 3 or 4 week period of time with all the rain we have gotten. As for my other plot, its wet. Very wet still. Plus I have ferns and golden rod to kill so they are hard to begin with. I plan on at least 2 more sprayings before planting. But with the ground being so wet I am having my doubts on this spot... Tominator
Re: Not happy with plot(s) progress.... Hard to say. Some seed will rot if it sits in ground that's too wet and cold, but I wouldn't think that would pertain to clover too much because the seed is so small. I agree with Todd, clover takes a pretty long time to see anything really noticable. I agree with William on the Roundup too. Sounds like the moisture maybe diluting your mix. I don't know about fern, but goldenrod is pretty tough to kill, as is tangle weed, thistle, and blackberry--those are the ones I have trouble with. VTbowman
Re: Not happy with plot(s) progress.... I may be jumping the gun on the 1st plot. I just assumed it would be further along. Its my 1st plot so I am not sure the time frame and all... The wet plot area is a big concern for sure. A perfect spot for a plot, and I would hate to give up on the idea, but I am not looking to spend $150 on spray and seed for nothing... I am going to get it tilled soon, knock down anything thats still tall and let the sun get to it for a while. July has always been a dry month for VT so I hope that helps. Seems like all the fields around here are still uncut so far with how wet everythign is. (Normally have been cut at least once.) I will be glad when they hay my property since the grass stands taller then my pick-up....
LETMGROW
Re: Not happy with plot(s) progress.... VT I wouldn't give up just yet. As far as the Roundup getting too wet you probably don't have a problem. If the Roundup had an hour to work before a rain it will be effective. The water you use to apply it with is a carrier for the product. You really aren't diluting it as long as you apply the proper amount per acre. Be a little more patient, the weather hasn't been the best over there. We have some hot humid weather coming soon. Let it pass then see what you have. Good Luck.
