Guest Andrea
Yesterday my husband went down to the landing to fish from the banks. ( We haven't had any rain hardly and the river is too low for boats) He had caught a few fish and put them on a stringer. When he was getting ready to leave, he starts pulling in the stringer of fish. Low and behold..........attached to one of the catfish was a water moccasin. It was biting the catfish over and over again. He killed the snake and let the fish go. He said it swam off like nothing was wrong. Wonder if fish are "immune" to venom??? Gator
Re: First time this has happened! I saw that happen when I was a kid, turned the whole stringer of fish loose. I doubt they are immune, but who knows. Was it definately a cottonmouth?
Guest Andrea
Re: First time this has happened! Oh yeah, it definitely was a moccasin/cottonmouth. We are VERY familiar with this kind of snake, trust me. They're everywhere. LOL...............get this----while trying to retrieve my lure from a log out on the water, I fell in. Up to my shoulders. Same exact place this snake was.
Gator
Re: First time this has happened! How'd you fall in if you were fishing from the bank?
Guest Andrea
Re: First time this has happened! I cast my lure across the lake and got it hung on a log. So I walked out on the log and tried to free it. I grabbed a stick and leaned out, knocked it free, then commenced to getting baptized. Guest whitetailarcher
Re: First time this has happened! Haha while your story of falling was extremely funny thats pretty scary, we don't have too many venomous snakes around here.

Guest Xen
Re: First time this has happened! i had a muskrat swim up to a dock where I was fishing off of and eat my entire stringer of bluegill once, that sucked and all, but it sure wasn't a snake

You say that like it's a bad word or something. Actually, how many women do you know that would bass fish, much less go after their own lure AND fall in without having a hissy fit!!!! Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: First time this has happened! I've caught several cottonmouths while bass fishing. Most hit plastic worms but I did catch one 3 footer several years ago on a crankbait. I've also heard of people finding them attached to fish on stringers and occasionally inside a fish basket. jbeck
Re: First time this has happened! Hey nick, I'd be careful. I think I'd have to take odds on HG giving ya a lickin. LOL I like to fish, but I don't think I'd like the whole snake thang you got going on down there.
Dakota
Re: First time this has happened! Oh, that'd be freaky! Sounds like you had an adventure, Andrea! lol. I was swimming once in a lake in the Black Hills and had a line snake swim right over my shoulder! Gone to the Black Hills five years in a row since then, havn't been to Horsethief Lake ever again! I fish a lot up here in SD and usually don't have to worry about poisonous snakes. We only have rattlers and they live west of the river or along it. So the nearest rattlesnake is easily 60 miles away at nearest. Dakota

It was over when the turtle bit the snake in half. It was pretty cool. You got watch the snapping turtles in Kansas they will eat your fish in the blink of an eye
Jeramie
Re: First time this has happened! Yep, those snappers will eat the fish quick. I cant tell you how many times ive pulled up a bass or bluegill with half the tail missing..... The will gladly take part in an easy meal. spyderpancake
Re: First time this has happened! Andrea, I have a problem staying out of the water too! At least you went out yourself instead of making your husband. You wouldn't happen to have a younger sister, would you? I have had plenty of poisonous snake experiences! i saw a 5 foot water moccasin once with a nice sized bream in its throat. He would have gotten it down, except he tried to swallow it the wrong way! The dorsal fins had stuck straight out and were stickin thru the outside of the snakes neck. So i gladly solved all his problems! I have had several stringer incidents too, have had turtles, snakes, and huge alligator gar try to steal our fish.
