WIDeer4Life
Dad picked some fertlizer up for me the other day and i was just wondering when the best time time to fertlize it would be. So far I've disced the plot once, so now im just waiting til August to plant it. Would it be ok to fertlize the same time as planting or would that "burn" the seed. I think Im going to plant Whitetail Institiute's Alfa Rack Plus. Thanks in advance. Kyle
FSU_Seminole
Re: When to Fertilize? I've always fertilized & sowed the seed at once then covered the seed up & its never hurt. I think the "burning the seed up" is if you're planting in a completely drought ridden seed bed or if you fertilize an already standing food plot that hasn't had any rain for weeks with none in the forseeable future. dogdoc
Re: When to Fertilize? I so the same as FSU. When planting time I disc up---then broadcast the fertilizer--disc again--then smooth the plot with a drag. Broadcast my seeds--then drag the plot. After the last drag I then drive over the plot with my ATV or tractor to pack the seed into the soil. This has always worked great for me. I like to disc in the fertilizer so I get better soil contact with the phos and potash. todd
wtnhunt
Re: When to Fertilize? I usually always broadcast my fertilizer at planting too. When fertilizing an exisintg plot later on, try to broadcast just before a rain.

Another thing to remember is that a lot of the Nitrogen is lost to the atmoshphere if it's not covered.
WIDeer4Life
Re: When to Fertilize? Alright thanks for the help guys. My neighbor who is a farmer said it might "burn" the seed but I'll trust the food plot experts here haha. Plus, it'save me some time if i just do it when I broadcast the seed. Thanks again. Guest cowpoke
Re: When to Fertilize? The fertilizer would only burn the seed if it comes in direct contact with it for too long. As a for example... if you mixed the seed and the fertilizer together and then broadcast them that would likely cause injury to some of the seed. Also sometimes, particularly when planting corn farmers will apply what is called a pop-up fertilizer that is put in the seed furrow in contact with the seed and that can cause injury. Broadcasting the fertilizer and discing , as several mentioned here, then planting the seed should not cause any injury to the seed.
