VTbowman
Anyone use this seed? If so what were your results? (given you did everything correctly-lol) I see it for sale for $9 per 4# bag down from around $16. 1 bag covers 4500 sq ft. It has a wide variety of seed mixed in that would be good for turkeys and deer.
Guest generallee
Re: Whitetail Institutes-Secret Spot food plot seed? I planted a bag last year and was pleased with how it came up. I didnt really hunt over it much, but it germinated quickly and grew well. I bought another bag for this fall in my latest basspro order. VTbowman
Re: Whitetail Institutes-Secret Spot food plot seed? I was wanting something that deer and turkeys would eat from and this has chickory, trefoil, 2 kinds of rape, 2 kinds of rye, oats, 3 or 4 clovers, and a couple others I can not think of. I figured it would be a good plot of both animals but I was not sure how well it grew or how much use the deer or turkeys got from it. Its cheap enough at $9 per bag... Worth a shot I guess. Anyone else?
Guest generallee
Re: Whitetail Institutes-Secret Spot food plot seed? [ QUOTE ] I was not sure how well it grew [/ QUOTE ] The soil where i hunt is horrible.....if it grows there, it ought to grow about anywhere. Good luck
FSU_Seminole
Re: Whitetail Institutes-Secret Spot food plot seed? Planted some of it 2 years in a row in the 03-04 seasons, germinated quickly came up like they said it would but the deer didn't eat it. Secret Spot is "No Plow" sold in a different bag with a few different clover seed in the mix. I guess it will attract deer if you really have a place in the big woods away from any other food source or when all food sources are gone. The deer on my property never touched it, even in the late season.
VTbowman
Re: Whitetail Institutes-Secret Spot food plot seed? Hmm thats not very encouraging... I would think that any sort of food plot put in where deer normally eat or travel would attract them being new growth compared to whatever else they are feeding on. For field grass that is. If you have mast crops, corn fields, or apple trees, etc, I could see them passing the food plot up for the higher fat and sweet things... wtnhunt
Re: Whitetail Institutes-Secret Spot food plot seed? Have never tried secret spot, but have heard mixed reviews on the product. I can tell you without any doubt that turkeys and deer both will eat what is in the hamannfarms grower mix. Seen them in my plot plenty of times. VTbowman
Re: Whitetail Institutes-Secret Spot food plot seed? OK OK I am not gonna lie. LOL I picked up 2 bags of this before I posted this. I am gonna give it a try and see what happens.. The area I plan is iffy with all the water and golden rod/ferns so I feel I have a 50:50 chance of getting a good plot in there anyways... If I get this stuff to grow and stay without being invaded by the GR/F again I will go to a better mix next summer. I do have one Growers Blend plot in so we will see come fall what happens. Thanks for the input.
wtnhunt
Re: Whitetail Institutes-Secret Spot food plot seed? Good luck with it. I looked for some secret spot here a couple years ago after hearing about some good results people were having with it, but couldnt find any and instead went something else. I planted some of this in the woods near a corn field. The corn was cut in August I planted this in Sept. But still by December after the deer had hammered the corn in October, November & December they ignored this plot. The clover & brassica in it was lush & green but the deer would through it to pick through an old corn field with barely any grain left in it. I planted this stuff 2 years in a row in different parts of the county I hunt & like the "No Plow" they just didn't touch it.
VTbowman
Re: Whitetail Institutes-Secret Spot food plot seed? If there is one rule abour deer anyone can follow is that they will never do what you want them too. LOL I only need it to slow down one deer during Nov or Dec so I am still hopefull. bigbuckdown70
Re: Whitetail Institutes-Secret Spot food plot seed? seen on wildlife management the other night they where talkign about the deer have to learn to eat at the food plot (if that makes sense) he didnt use those exact words but in that way i planted 3 acers of clover 2 years ago and didnt see much using it but this year you cant keep them out of it last year i planted green patch plus (which did losy do to my stupity) and turnups in a newly cleared food plot anf they didnt touch the turnups til feb. but that could have been due to great acorn crop last year so i dont know if that guy was right are not
VTbowman
Re: Whitetail Institutes-Secret Spot food plot seed? My only hope is that the new food plot clover and other plants planted are sweeter then the other 40+ acres of it out in my fields. LOL The thing I have in my favor is that they are in super used transition areas and on heavily used deer trails to those large fields. Basically I could hang stands here without food plots and still get shots on deer but its my hope they do get something out of them too. Not just make themselves a target for me.. Time will tell. I think food plots do give the deer a better offering in diet though.
hoytguy08
Re: Whitetail Institutes-Secret Spot food plot seed? i bought two bags to plant this fall, i'm planting it by stands that are already productive and i'm hoping it will give deer an added reason to walk by.
