outdoorsmen1
i know this question has been asked numerous amount of times, but i have a little 1/4 acre field, and i have corn planted in it right now, but plan on cutting it when it gets time. But in the fall i was wondering what i should plant, the field gets a lot of grass. thanks Dalton
slughunter
Re: best thing to plant? this spring I planted some prograze by evolved habbitats, I worked awsome, the deer riped it up and at it all day, and dogdoc told me its more of a fall type planty so if I had good results in the spring, fall planting should be better. so try either prograze or shot plot, they are supost to grow 24 inches tall in 45 days and mine has been in that long and its 21 inches tall, but I didnt do any soil test or limeing, I just worked the ground and planted. give it a try this fall -shane
wtnhunt
Re: best thing to plant? For a small fall planted plot you might try the clover and rye supreme from pennington. They make a great seed that germinates very fast. Another option would be to check on hamannfarms site and see of his seeds which would best suite you. Do you want a perenial or an annual? I have had good results from the hamannfarms grower mix, will be planting some of his winter blend here this year in some small plots. FSU_Seminole
Re: best thing to plant? I also have a small 1/4 piece of land that fingers its way back into the woods. I'll be planting some "Shot Plot" there this fall. Slughunter is right, the shot plot brassica grows 24 inches tall & has big leafy plants. My thinking is if you're going to have a plot that small plant something that will take time for the deer to eat without being overgrazed really fast. Todd had a few photos of his "shot plot" last year & the leaves in it were HUGE.
Bownarow
Re: best thing to plant? Brassicas, brassicas, brassicas. If you can get these planted in some capacity you won't regret it. The deer will slam it after a couple of good frosts hit it.
