GWSmith Posted July 11, 2006 Report Share Posted July 11, 2006 On any morning that you wake up during the hunting season... What is the one type of Weather that you Do Not Want? How do you deal with it and keep your motivation going strong? For me the type of Weather that I hate to see when I peek out the door the first time is Heavy Rain. I feel like someone just poked a metal stake into a Balloon...I absolutely hate it. It's even worse to be awakened by Thunder! I'm actually listening to Thunder outside as I type this(which reminded me of how much I hate Heavy Rain on the morning of a Hunt) As for keeping the motivation going after I see that heavy rain falling...it's not easy but like many others I have to hunt when I have the time to hunt so I'll go anyways. I try my best to keep reminding myself that eventually the rain will either slow down or stop completely and the deer movement will be Fantastic afterwards!!! Out there, a strong northwest wind is the worst. It blows across a couple of hundred miles of open country and can really get bad. And good visibility is a must for hunting the open, semi-arid terrain. The next worst thing is fog. Don't get it too often, but it has the same effect of limiting visibility. We do get some pretty rough ones from time to time, have even returned home on a few occasions to find that tornadoes had been in the area while I was out during the October-early November time frame. Since you mention lightning, when i was out putting my stealth cam out the other day, I noticed an oak tree that I used to have a ladder stand in the had a nice long line of missing outer bark down the east side of the tree where it had gotten struck. (both of which truely happened before) I'd rather be the key on Ben Franklin's Kite Seriously...I'll go out, sit in the truck and drink coffee, until it stops popping the Bolts from the sky before I'll stay home when I get a chance to go hunting. I always check the radar before I go and if it is going to clear up in an hour or less, then I just head to my stand a little later. If it is going to rain for a while, I just go back to sleep. Then you have to worry about those little buzzes around your ears. and if youre into bow hunting Scent control just went out the window. Typically the only way I cope is to take off any garment not needed that very minute (gloves, mask, hat). I then drink some water as soon as I get up in the tree. I must say that since I bought a gortex parka rain is just another obstical just like steep slopes. I really hate a heavy snowfall that is covering tracks. The only thing that can be good about those days is if my brother does a some stalking and bumps deer my way. When you gotta deal with mosquitos and sweating during a hunt, it isn't very pleasing. High winds aren't fun to hunt in either, mainly because it slows down the deer movement. It just gets too unbarable and dangerous too, when branches and trees start coming down. Besides, I get cold a lot easier these days than I used to. I don't mind an on and off shower though. I guess heavy rain would be close but I normally don't hunt if it is pouring. A light rain I actually think is good hunting weather...
