Brassica Question?

Re: Brassica Question?

Ask Todd. He convinced me to try Martins hamann farms winter blend. Will be planting a couple different plots here with brassicas in them a bit later on this year.

Only experience I have really had with brassicas was, tried biologic full draw and the deer here would not touch the stuff. Think and hope from what Todd has said, I should be in for a different much better experience with the blend that Martin has worked up.

Re: Brassica Question?

We had great success with EH Shot-Plot last year and plan to plant again the last week of July. The deer really liked it after the first frost. It comes in about the same time clovers etc. are dying off. The deer don't bother it much while it is growing, they did bed down in it though. After the first killing frost you couldn't drive them out of the brassica plots.

I need to contact Todd to see if his preferred blend would work up here in the north country. I'd be willing to plant some to compare. You never know unless you try.

Here is what I am going with this fall/winter blend to the right hamann farms, got my winter blend on the way.

Martin grows his seed in Wisconsin mostly I think, would think they would be pretty good for cooler climates, but you might pm him and ask him.

Re: Brassica Question?

I use to plant shot plot but two years ago Hamann Farms came out with a new Winter Brassica Mix. They are northern blend seeds so they should work just about anywhere. They worked great here in Oklahoma---and by January there wasn't a leaf left on them. Here is a pic:

For whatever reason, they don't touch it around here. They step over my broccoli and other brassicas and go right for my beans and corn.

[/ QUOTE ]

leave that broccoli and your other brassicas alone and I bet they'll eat them this winter.

I have. I don't know why they don't care for it. Probably because there's so much available to them around me. Loads of waste corn and beans and the odd alfalfa field here and there.

I think different brassica seeds work better in different places. You might have to do like I did & strip plant different seed varieties next to each other to see which ones your deer like best. I almost completely gave up on brassica all together if it wasn't for Todd.

Bet Todd is right Chris. hope so anyways, as I am going with some brassicas in a winter blend this year.

The deer and coons around here anymore tend to not touch anything in our garden, at least not in the past couple years since I have been utilizing the electric fence as protection for the sweet corn.
