Re: 6mm-06

I have heard of the 6.5-06 and I am sure that someone has reduced it down to 6mm-06 also.

They use the 6.5-06 for some serious long range shooting! 1,000 matches, etc.

Should be an interesting gun. You will have to do some handloading for that one!!

Re: 6mm-06

Yeah, it's been around for yaers, The 240 Wby is nothing more than a 06 case with a belt on it. The 6mm-06 as you know is a handloading cartridge only. For current reloading data I would look at starting loads for the 240 Wby. I would ask grampa for any data and cases he might have for itand also forming/reloading dies for it. I have a 6mm-284 and a 6.5-06 Max Imp that the later cartridge does take quite a bit of work to form cases. With the 6mm-06 I would think the 25-06 case would be a place to start.I dont know what type of chamber it is but when you size case necks down they tend to thicken and you might have to turn down/ream the necks.

Some of this sounds complicated but it;s not, it's just something that goes along with wildcatting. When I was younger I loved to experiment with different wildcats....now I find it a drag grin.gif

Re: 6mm-06

Great round!! I had often thought if I ever did a wildcat, the 6-'06 would be the one. Probably never will, though, as the 25-06 is nearly its ballistic twin and the components are all OTC. But since you're set up with everything from the get-go........have a blast!!!! Let us know how the thing does. wink.gif

Re: 6mm-06

Yep, I have a 6-06 Improved. The best brass to start with is the .270 as it has the longer necks. It allows you to customize it to the chamber. If you use 30-06 brass, you will need to step it down to .270 first. Also like doubleA mentioned, you haver to watch the neck thickness. This cartridge likes the slower powders. I can push a 60 gr bullet 4200 fps. I have settled on the 87 gr V-Max going about 3750 fps. This is my long range setup. I don't even bring it out unless I want to shoot 500 + yards.

One thing to keep in mind is the twist. Since this is a custom gun, it may have a fast or slow twist barrel. If the twist is 1 in 12 you are limited to how heavy you can shoot. The 87 gr is about as heavy as you can go with that setup. If it has a faster twist, you can go heavier.
