Re: building a home

Ah yes...cost. Well, to begin with we purchased the land three years ago for $35,000.00 and the same 6.29 acres, which borders National Forest Service land, would sell for close to $100,000.00 on today's market. We had the well/pump and septic system complete the first year for $7,500.00 and $2,500.00 respectively. The cost of building the house, garage and breezeway will be $200,000.00. It cost $8,300.00 to have the electric and phone line put in. Taxes are an unknown at this time but should be around $3,000.00 per year. With the real estate market here in the northwest corner of Montana the finished product will appraise at close to $500,000.00. Unfortunately this area has become a desired place to live or, for the wealthy, to have a second home. It is amazing the number of people who have the wealth to build 5,000 to 10,000 square foot homes that cost in the millions, but even more amazing is that many of them are second homes that are lived in for just a few weeks of the year or in the summer only. The county we live in is more than 80% public land open to hunting and seldom visited by the wealthy, who tend to congregate on the lakes and golf courses in the summer and the ski areas in the winter. Sorry, I didn't mean to get off the subject, but keep in mind it is expensive indeed to live in my piece of paradise.
