VTbowman
I went out to check on the plots today and snapped a few pics. Here is my Growers Blend in plot 1. I still feel it should be more growth but its doing good I think. PLot 2 however is just not dying like I would like it too. It was sprayed at twice recommended amounts about 3 weeks ago. Or The ferns grow really fast with all this wet weather and has come back in.
wtnhunt
Re: Not so unhappy with plot progress.... Looks to me like it is coming along ok. Did you fertilize the grower plot Shawn? On that second plot you have pictured, think I would hit it with a higher concentration iof roundup one more time in the heat of the day when there is no chance for rain. dogdoc
Re: Not so unhappy with plot progress.... that plot looks great to me. looks to be progressing just about normal. right now they just put enough above ground for photosynthesis for developing that nice deep root system. ferns are really tough to kill--keep spraying. What concentration of Roundup are you using and how much water are you mixing in the final product?
Tominator
Re: Not so unhappy with plot progress.... Agree with William and Todd. If the ferns don't go next time, I'd consider hauling a bottom plow up there.
VTbowman
Re: Not so unhappy with plot progress.... I did not fert the clover plot. Just mowed it down once dead (twice mowed to really chop it up) and had it tilled under the day I planted it, then Harley raked the seed under and smooth it all out... As for the "ferns" plots (lol) I used the concentrated round up. The 30 minute rain proof stuff. 1 bottle is suppose to mix 5 gallons of water. I put 1 full bottle in my 2 gal sprayer on both plots when I sprayed them. Both took 2 full sprayers worth for the size I have them. I had no rain after sparying at all. The ground was super wet at that time though so it may of deluted in the root system but at more the double strength required, I am not sure that was it. I have my neight coming over this week to turn it over good. Then I will wait a couple weeks and spray it again. Thats the plan anyways... wtnhunt
Re: Not so unhappy with plot progress.... May not be very fun, but I would spray in the middle of a hot day. Have never tried that fast acting roundup, but the stuff I use(a concentrate) I can spray a fence row in the middle of the day, and it usually will be turning yellow by that afternoon. same with when I spray my plots, usually they start to yellow the same afternoon I spray. Maybe cutting the ground up will help the soil get more air and dry out.

LETMGROW
Re: Not so unhappy with plot progress.... Ferns are hard to kill when they have grown large. I would mow them down as best i could, wait a couple days then spray them again. This gives the herbicide a chance to hit more plants as the large leaves will tend to protect other leaves. The shorter plants left after cutting will allow the herbicide to get to the root system more quickly. The herbicide has to touch each plant to be effective.
