Sight-In & Practice

I am headed to the range tomorrow to start my fall sight-in and practice so I will be ready for hunting.

I will be shooting my Tikka 270 & 308. I am using Hornady Interbonds in both guns. Getting them ready for both deer and elk.

I am also going to take my S&W 357 to check out some light loads that I have loaded up!

I believe a person can never get enough range time in before hunting season.

Too true! I remember reading a long time ago a quote from some famous gun writer, might have been Elmer Keith, that said "No round fired at a known target is a wasted round." I've always thought those were words of wisdom.

Re: Sight-In & Practice

I had a great time shooting. I tried a different load for the 270 and it proved to be useless. Back to the old standby of 58 grains of Rel 22 with the Hornady, 130 grain Interbonds and I shot a 3 shot group that measured just over 1" at 200 yards! I'll take it. smile.gif

I also shot my 308 and I had a 3 shot group that was right at 1" at 200 yards. The load was 45.9 grains of IMR 4895 over 150 grain Hornady Interbond. I will take that one also. smile.gif

I am going to go back with these same loads and do some more shooting. It was nice to get out there because I have not fired a rifle since last October when I tore my knee up!

There was a guy out there that was shooting a new Kimber 8400, 270 WSM and the barrel was fouling something terrible. Even after only one shot, the barrel was really fouling! They must have forgotten to lap the barrel at the factory! frown.gif

All in all, it was a great day and my wife and I went to the trailer and spent the weekend after I got home! smile.gifcool.gifsmile.gif

Re: Sight-In & Practice

Do you have to pay for the range? I just found out we have one here but it's $50 for the year. It's supposed to be pretty nice with a 100, 200 and 450 rifle range. Skeet and seperate sporting clay, pistol range and 22 range for any rimfire shooting. All are seperated from each other so you can walk down range on one while folks are shooting in the others.

Also sporting clays and skeet are $3 a round.

Does that sound resonable?

Re: Sight-In & Practice

That is very reasonable for a range that covers all those different shooting venues!

Our range is owned by a club in town and the dues are $30.00 a year and members pay $2.00 per day to shoot. Non-members pay $6.50 per day! We can shoot out to 500 yards. It is for rifles and pistols only! No trap or skeet!

I'm interested in those interbond bullets. I've used the old spire point with the interlock ring for elk for the past couple years. The 180 grain bullet out of my 30/06 seems to be really accurate & kills elk just fine. Still with all you read & see on the net about those bonded bullets----I'd be interested in your opinion. I know you have whacked a few elk OJR.

Re: Sight-In & Practice

I have not shot an elk with the Interbonds, but have shot deer with them and they sure do hold together and penetrate just great!

I shot one buck, hit a rib going in and it turned to shrapnel. This and the bullet turned the heart to mush! The bullet exited the far side and the hole was about double the diameter in the 270 bullet and that was all! Needless to say, he didn't go very far!

I also shot another buck with the 308 at about 200 yard and that one went through the chest and turned the lungs to jelly! He didn't go far either.

That is the only bullet I am using!

I had real good luck with the standard Hornady bullets with the interlock and these are better than they were. Also more accurate!

I have also had good luck with the Hornady SST's but quit using them in favor of the Interbonds!
