clearing land?

Recommended Posts

i didnt know where else this would go so i decided to put it in here.

ive got a permenant stand back in the woods, and ive been getting pics of some REALLY nice deer, esp. for NC and around here.

and i was wondering what you thought about chearing lanes?

i was gonna clear 2 shoot lanes about 10-20 ft. wide and about 75 yards long, do you think having the bulldozer back their would scare them off?

thanks confused.gif

Re: clearing land?

I wouldn't pressure them that much, and I wouldn't cut a lane that wide.

Are you a gun, or bowhunter? I'm assuming gun because I don't think you'll need a lane 75 yards for a bow.

Personally, I just trim up the branches or small saplings that might be in my way out to about 40 yards, but I'm mainly a bowhunter.

Re: clearing land?

Dont think the dozer would bother them too much. Deer are usually pretty tolerant of machinery and equipment. They may go away for a while, but so long as you do what you are planning to do soon, you should be ok. Also remember that come fall and into winter things will look different, dont remove too much where you dont have natural cover left.

nope---get in and get out. It may change the pattern for a few days but they'll be back. The sooner you get it done the better. If you're just planning on bowhunting then I'd just clear a few shooting lanes but if you're wanting to rifle hunt then you want to be able to take that longer shot.

i have a feeder their, at 16.5 yards for bow, and when gun season comes, i was gonna put the feeder in the lanes.

He's right. Deer season here starts Sept 1st for guns & I think NC may be later than that, so anything you do in the woods now won't affect them. Especially if you're back their with machinery.

Not only will you have a shooting lane but it sounds like you'll have a perfect set up with some kind of food plot to. After clearing in there you may want to spray with some sort of round up, wait a week then toss a few seeds in there.

Cant argu with that... LOL

I cut a 100 yard long lane about 30 feet wide and another about 75 yards long and a bit wider for one rifle stand I have up in my woods.

I did not bulldoze but did run a chain saw in there a few wekeknds in a row and then a 4 wheeler and trailer to remove the firewoods.

All in all I spoent about a months or so up there messin around with that 2 day project. LOL

Did not effect the deer at all come hunting season...

Round-Up won't do it. Round-Up needs to be sprayed on living, growing plants. It's a bit late for a pre-emergent herbicide, too. Your best bet at this point, if you wanna establish a plot, is to let the natural vegetation start to grow, then hammer it with Round-Up in about 3 or 4 weeks. Start your plot this fall with a clover mix.
