Amusingly sad are the perfect words to describe our dog at this time.

She had only gone through her first estrus cycle when we took her to the Vet a few days ago. (She is about 10 months old).

Her breed is mixed, with a little of this and some of that.

After having her spayed, her personality has changed drastically.

Our Vet told us that he noticed during the surgery, that she was in false-pregnancy.

He showed my wife the corpus luteum that was removed during the process, and it was about the size of one puppy.

Since the operation was performed during this time of false pregnancy, I read that her symptoms may stick around for 7 weeks or more. I’m not sure if the symptoms will return later, now that her ovaries have been removed.

She will build her a nest with all the dog blankets under the coffee table and gather her stuffed toys. Then she attempts to force her imaginary family to nurse. She is most fond of her white lamb and her teddy bear.

All I can say is that it is indeed amusingly sad to watch.

I hope this will be over soon, as it seems she is torturing herself.

She will stay in her nest for the entire day and barely leave her nest to eat and get water.

We have tried to distract her with balls and other non-puppy looking toys but she cannot to be distracted from her mothering task.

It is too bad she is not a pure bred dog, because she would have made a great mother.

We are to take her back to have her stitches removed Thursday. Maybe the Vet can give her some anti-hormone shots or something.

Re: Amusingly Sad:

Go borrow someones teenage puppies. After a few hours with them she will be over it...... grin.gif

That instinct is powerful! It amazes me. I have a Mare I thout would never be a good mother. She surprised me by really taking care of her foal. About 7-months later the poor kid hit a fence and shattered her right front leg. I felt horrible but what surprised me was the way the Mare acted after the colt was gone. You could tell she knew something was wrong. She acted like that for a couple of weeks....

Just goes to show you a Mommy is still a Mommy.

Re: Amusingly Sad:

That's funny.

We had a dog that did that once. She wasn't spayed, so every now and then she would have a "pseudo preganancy." She used to carry this stupid stuffed animal around and put it on her abdomen to "nurse" it. She would freak if anyone got close to the stuffed animal. smirk.gif

I have always thought it was so interesting that a dog would do that. I've never had one act that way, luckily. Now, I have had just the opposite!!!

Long time ago we had a beagle that was giving birth to her first litter and she tried to bury them. crazy.gif

I had to keep taking them away until they were all born. After I cleaned them she got used to them and turned out to be a good mother.

Also had a chihuahua that wanted everyone else's babies!!! grin.gif

Hope your puppy feels better soon!!! smirk.gif
