Thanks, I Needed That

Some of you may recall me posting about Jamie Crum who is part of Lima Co. with the Marines. Jamie saw quite a bit of combat over there and has been unwinding since he came back in March.

Turns out, I don't know how, but Jamie has taken an interest in bowhunting. He has a friend who has funded a guided bear hunt in Maine next summer for him and a couple buddies. So around mid April, my buddy Bob (who will probably be Jamie's father in law someday) told me that Jamie got a bow and knows nothing about it. I offered to have him out to my place anytime so he can shoot and get tuned up before he goes.

So from mid April til the other day I've been bugging Bob to bring Jamie out so we can shoot. Don't get me wrong, but after 6 weeks of being inundated with kids, I need adult time every now and then. Monday I got a call from Bob saying they'd like to come out Tuesday, so I jumped at the chance. After 2 pretty rough weeks for me, I was really looking forward to it. I shot Ohiobucks a PM and let him know and invited him out cool.gif.

Yesterday around 6 p.m. a pretty big thunderstorm rolled through and I was worried it might hang around and spoil the shoot. My phone rang and it was Bob. We talked and decided to play it by ear to see what happened, then my phone rang again and it was Tom saying he wasn't going to come. So I teased him a bit, called him girl a few times, and hung up. About 6:30, the skies really cleared and the sun came out. So I called Tom back up and told him it had cleared, but he still said "I'm out.....we'll have plenty of opportunities....." (so much for carpe diem, eh?) OK, I said and proceeded to put my ladder stand up. As I was ratcheting the seat down, my phone rang cool.gif Tom says "hey, it's clear blue skies here...." grin.gif And I said, "told you it'd clear up." So he mumbled something about "let me get my stuff, I'll be over." cool.gif

About that time Bob rolled up. The guys got out of the truck and it turns out Bob brought Jamie's cousin Chad and a mutual friend Sidney. Now Sidney, talk about a great guy. This guy is a millionaire (or close to it I guess), but one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to know. Sidney is a hero in his own right. He took Jamie under his wing when he was over in Iraq and bought him a bunch of stuff that the Marines generally don't issue. Things like tritium sights for his rifle, night vison goggles, special glasses and watches and all kinds of stuff. Easily dropped over $3,000 on Jamie I guess, so it was good to meet him. So after meeting Chad and Sidney we got to shooting a little. I worked with Jamie's form a little, checked out his bow and then Tom rolled up.

So we shot a little, made some adjustments to Jamie's bow, got him squared away, lost a few arrows, so Bob de-thatched half my lawn with the rake trying to find the errant arrows. (I think we found them all actually). Tom busted out the Trykon and drilled the targets. I climbed the ladder stand and shot at the 40 yard target, and actually hit it. cool.gif Not bad for the first time shooting this summer.

We had a pretty good time and shot well after sundown, while continuing to tune Jamie's bow. Afterwards we all had a beer or 3 and basically talked, swapped stories etc till about 10:30 when the beer ran out.

Sure was fun. Sure did need that. So thankful my buds came through when I needed it.

Thanks again for coming out Tom.

Here's the pic my son took:
