Guest wmramse
I've caught a ton of these ugly critters on trot lines, but I always toss 'em back - dead or alive. They just look too ugly to consider eating! I've heard a few folks here and there say they were good eating, and my FIL claims they're outstanding trot line bait, but I guess I've never got that hungry. Just yesterday I got my Field and Stream, and there were several letters in there from people that say they're some of the best eating fresh water fish there is I dunno...what do ya'll think? Jeramie
Re: Okay, who REALLY eats gar? Yes. Ive had gar. They arent bad but full of bones. My brother loves them and we use to keep one when we snagged for spoonbill. Dont think youre going to cut through them with a standard knife, be ready for the work. The meat isnt bad but not worth the effort, imho.
Guest Andrea
Re: Okay, who REALLY eats gar? I've posted on this before. They ARE good to eat if you eat the little guys. The big ones do NOT taste good. Their skin ( scales) are like armor so cleaning them is tough. You have to use what we call "tin snips" ( sheet metal scissors) to cut thru their scales. They are very bony so you have to gash them just like you would for chain pickerel. I think gars are neat looking and even the spotted ones are beautiful. You wanna talk about a fight?? They are so much fun to catch. Next time you catch one under 20 inches or so, fry him up......then tell me what you think. Here's one we caught a couple of months ago, he was about 3 feet long. We put him back. [image][/image]
vagobbln
Re: Okay, who REALLY eats gar? Virginia Gar/Carp Recipe Start with a hot open campfire. Attach the gar or carp (whole) to a wooden board. Oak or cherry would be best. Cook over the fire turning after about 15 minutes. Remove from fire. Throw the fish away and eat the board.
