Re: rife advice plz

Unless you plan to keep or sell the fur/pelt, you could use anything from a .243 on up to a 30-06 effectively for deer and coyotes. Some guys will tell you a .223 or a 22-250 but I personally think they are a bit light for deer, and are not legal calibers for deer in some states.

Re: rife advice plz

I agree with William. Some people hunt with .223 and the like around here. Its a bit to small for my taste.

Personally id go for the .243. I bought my first .243 less then a year ago and im so very impressed. They are a great round for deer and flat shooting as can be. Use 100grn loads and you can take deer/ hogs/ etc. Drop that to 85grn (or less) and youve got a great varmint round. You can even go lighter then that and look for Ground hogs!

Personally im shooting dead money at 200yds. I step up to 100yd and im still shooting the same spot. Great, flat round. Ammo is cheap and very easy to find....

o ya wat dose a 243 go for around?

[/ QUOTE ]

say what? crazy.gif it might be a little bit easier to help if we can understand what you are saying! wink.gif Any of the rounds that were mentioned will do the job, another option is the .260 Remington. It uses the same case as a .243 and .308(along with many more!) and is a great, very accurate, low-recoil round. You should be able to get a decent rifle (savage, remington, ruger) for around $500

Re: rife advice plz

You've left a lot to the imagintion here squirrelyman34.

1. What state do you live in? This makes a big difference. If your in FL your talking about a much smaller deer than if your in WI or MI. The smaller deer in FL would be fine with a 223, but up north the 25-06 would probibly be the minumum.

2. How much money do you have to spend. Remember you've got to put a scope on that thing too. If you've got $400 or less you might want to think about an NEF single shot so you've got enogh $$ left over to put some good glass on top. If you've got more you might want a Remington 700 or Winchester 70.

3. How much do you want to spend on ammo? The 243 is going to be considerably less than a lot of the comperable calibers like 7MM-08 or 25-06.

As far as which one between 243 and 25-06, I've got both and love them. My only gripe is there isn't much choice in ammo at walmart for the 25-06, but my gun loves what they have, so it's ok.

Re: rife advice plz

Really depends on how much money you want to spend. Bought my wife a savage model 10 in .243. After a trigger job on the gun and putting a nikon bukmasters scope on the gun, it is a really sweet shooting light rifle. Also put her on a pachmayr decelerator pad. Using the cheap remington core lokts, she has killed two deer with this rifle here so far. One shot on each, neither deer went more than 10 yards.

You could use a 25-06 or even a .270 or 30-06. Have seen where remington has 100 grain rounds out for the .270, seems to me that would be a really flat shooting round, not sure if the bullet is designed for varmints though.

Personally I prefer calibers that offers some choices in reasonable ammo that can be found easily. Have never been to wal mart here after ammo and not been able to have choices for the .270 or the .243.

Re: rife advice plz

25-06 is a great cartridge. That being said if you wanted some other ideas here are my favorites.

6mm Remington--Should be more populare than the .243 but didn't catch on for some reason, it is fast, flat, and light on recoil.

257 Roberts--This is what I shoot coyotes with personally and have taken several deer with it as well.

280 Remington--It is right between the 30-06 and the .270, but it has great ballistics.

300 Winchester Short Magnum--I love this cartridge, it will do about anything in North America.

Re: rife advice plz

I just added a 25-06 barrel for my Encore after looking at various caliburs. I looked at alot of different caliburs and the 25 seemed to fit my bill. All the caliburs the guys mentioned are good caliburs for what you want. I wouldn't go any smaller than a .243 for deer though. You also don't need something that has lots of recoil for a deer either. Good luck and ask all your hunting buddies what they use. smirk.gif
