Guest HaDeRonDa
What rifle would it be? I've been offered something of my choosing from a guy I work for. I'm in a situation where if plan "A" falls apart and I can not get permission to hunt this chunk of land I would like a new rifle, plan "B". Plan "C" is camping rights to this property once a year. I currently have a Ruger M77 .270 and a Winchester 30-30. I love them both but want a Savage model 99 if I can find one in good condittion that is a shooter. What gun would you want. Your opinion could sway mine. Any suggestions?

OJR
Re: If you had a grand to spend... Tikka in either a 270, 308 or a 30-06! Burris or Pentax scope! Can't go wrong with that combination!
Guest andymansavage
Re: If you had a grand to spend... Easy, keep your m77 and sink the money into a premium scope. The 270 is a great caliber and the m77 is a good rifle. I would top it with a swaro and hit the range. Guys spend too much on rifles and skimp on the glass when they would be better served goin g with a base model rifle and a great scope. If your ruger has good glass. Then go with the tikka in .300 wsm. Andy
Strut10
Re: If you had a grand to spend... I've, pretty much, filled most of my rifle "wants". With $1K to spend, I'd probably go with either: ...Browning BLR in .358 Win with the rest of the $ going into the glass. ...Weatherby Vanguard Youth Compact .308 (ultimate economy packer rifle with 20" barrel & 6 lbs.) and the balance into the glass. ...Another assorted Winchesrter Big Bore 94 or two to add to my collection. A good 308 with a good scope is hard to beat for a versitile large game gun.

It is not a Weatherby. It is made by Howa and Weatherby puts their name on it! There are several that are better guns than that!

[/ QUOTE ] Say what you like...........the Howaby is an excellent rifle for the money or otherwise. With minimal load development, my daughter's rifle is shooting MOA with her at the controls. We did a good bit of research before she purchased this rifle. In the 6 lb. category, there is NOTHING that compares in the "under $500" category. wtnhunt
Re: If you had a grand to spend... Have heard good things about the tikka rifles, but have never shot one of them myself. Really honestly dont know, several good rifles out there could be bought and would leave you with enough leftover for a good scope. Am kind of partial to remington model 700's myself, but also like the browning a bolts. Guess if i had a grand to play with I would just have to check out several and see what feels best to me. Strut10
Re: If you had a grand to spend... Just go find yourself a "shooter" 99 and be happy. For $1K you can get a "shooter" in a collectible chambering like .284 Win or .358 Win.
strubedog
Re: If you had a grand to spend... I would buy a tikka, maybe adjust the trigger and go have fun. Not really another gun I would be excited to own for under $1k. I suppose I could get by with a remington, then get it bedded and floated while getting trigger adjusted. But I rather have the tikka from the get go.

I sure would like one that hasn't been beaten and that shoots like so many 99 that my friends have. That is if plan A is not accepted. I really have no need for another gun, well I do but my .270 can kill anything I point at at almost any range that is ethical to shoot game at and my 30-30 is the cats meow for some close range hunting that I occasionally do. That ole model 99 Savage would be more of, "and here is my other gun" sort of deal!

Guest HaDeRonDa
Re: If you had a grand to spend... I know, I know. I feel shamed now! LOL I consider myself a pretty practical guy though my wife wopuld tell a different story. I have a hard enough time picking wether I hunt with the 270 or the 30-30 as it is. Some years I hunt with one and others I hunt with the other just so that I don't have to pick. The years I pick the gun for the specific area are years I have a hard time picking which boots to wear as well. Those have been tough years. I pass in deer I shouldn't, I stillhunt too fast etc....maybe those years I just should have made an appointment with a schrink! LMBO this has been a great post for me and have looked at some high end optics that I have never been able to afford. My .270 sure would appreciate a good set of stacked glass. Although it's a tack driver now wiht it's free floated barrel and because of it's age it's trigger is adjustable and set up just right ,it sure would make twilight shooting easier if I had a better scope than it has on it now. With all this rambling this early on a Sunday morning I need to call a doctor now!!! Thanks guys for the help. I was stuck in a rut thinking of one dumb idea after another. hunterfisherman
Re: If you had a grand to spend... The new Pro Hunter from Thompson Center is under a grand and has numerous riffle barrels that can be added to it. I shot one two weeks ago with a 50 cal muzzleloader barrel on it and it was amazing. They have about 14 barrels in different riffle calibers that can be purschase for it. All purpose gun with all the extras
AJ
Re: If you had a grand to spend... I would look for a beat up Rem 700 in the $250 price range and send the barreled action to Pac-Nor for rebarreling. It would be chambered for a practical cartridge for the guns intended use. I would refinish the wood stock or look at a Bell and Carlson synthetic. Either one would be at the minimum glass bedded and whatever money remained, would be used on a scope. Jeramie
Re: If you had a grand to spend... Rem 700, 30-06. My choice too. Id then throw out some cash on a trigger job and good glass.
