Re: Contest Problem! If You Entered, Read This!

Sorry Bill,

I was thinking I was under the inch requirement and really thought I was OK. But I checked it again and it turns out I was still at 96DPI. I resized it to 72DPI. So now it is less than or equal to both maximums (7" and 72DPI) just to be safe.

I aksed a few other members(moderators) about my entry's size prior to submitting it. If it is too big, please let me know Bill.

[/ QUOTE ]

I resized it for you William, drop me a pm with your email address, and Ill send it it to you!

HSOG, your pic is fine! Both of them are below the 7" set limit!

What is that in Pixels Bill ??

?X?

[/ QUOTE ]

Steve, I believe that would be around 361 X 504..... wink.gif

I just double checked mine and it seems to be right on....

[/ QUOTE ]

I think a 7" limit was set but it was not said which way! So I would guess 504x504 or 7" x 7" at 72 DPI is ok!

John this is what it says in the rules....

[ QUOTE ]

Images should be no larger than 7 inches on it's longest side and no more than 72dpi.

[/ QUOTE ]

So I would say you are correct if the image is 7x7" without losing it aspect ratio... wink.gif

72 dpi is screen resolution, so you don't lose any of the eye candy... wink.gif

Ok, I been resizing and sending there pics back in email, the ones that have them in their profile! Most of them are well within the size of the photo, just the DPI was too large! Its up to them to either repost or change the link of their posted image!

Re: Contest Problem! If You Entered, Read This!

Thamks John for the resizing of my picture, as far as DPI's go.

I've checked my MGI photosuite SE program and can't find anywhere in there where you can check DPI.

Thanks again John.

By the way, I just named the picture identical to the old one, and uploaded it to the same folder in Photobucket. This made it possible to switch pictures, without reposting. wink.gif

Steve, here is a neat program that is free to use. It does what a lot of programs that cost much more does. Great for resizing ALL file types.

I don't have any problem downsizing pictures. I just can't manipulate the DPI in a picture.

Re: Contest Problem! If You Entered, Read This!

Thank you for resizing my photo John.

Dont have any problem resizing photos either, but dont know about how you figure the 7 inch. Like buckee, wondered if that was 7 inches on the physical screen of a certain size monitor?

Re: Contest Problem! If You Entered, Read This!

I had the same problem Buckee had because I too use the MGI software. I couldn't find it on there either Buckee frown.gif

My wife's sister's computer has Microsoft Picture It on it. It allows you to manipulate DPI and pixel size. Luckily I was able to make the changes from her computer.

The pixel size that software came up with for my photo was 480 x 360. That's probably just a safe size for my uncropped photos.

As a suggestion for the future, since inch size and DPI causes so much confusion. And since it's coming to light that some software programs don't directly access DPI or Inch size.

A pixel by pixel size limit and a file size limit may be more appropriate for forum photo contests.

Good luck everyone,

Leo

Re: Contest Problem! If You Entered, Read This!

Just a pixel size limit would not work either, 72 DPI was set as the internet standard for pictures. Otherwise it would take the normal person on dial-up forever to download every web site they visit! 72 DPI keeps the size down of every picture file now, which is the idea! Keeping it low! Because I could have two identical pictures, one at the 72 DPI, and one at 1200 DPI. The 72 DPI would load up way faster than the 1200 DPI!

That's all fine and dandy if you have the capability of changing the DPI. grin.gif (Whatever that is....LMBO grin.gif)

Re: Contest Problem! If You Entered, Read This!

Steve,, you would have to open your picture in a software program and then look at the properties,,, it will then give you the dimensions and the DPI ( Viewing Resolution)....

I realize that MGI III doesn't give you the means of DPI manipulation after checking around in my copy of that program.... I think I-Photo has a free downloadedable version,, I'll check on that for ya... wink.gif

In your case your picture is 2.89 x 4.47 inches in diameter and your DPI is 96,, which is over the 72 that is the limit... Before John corrected it for ya... wink.gif

And for those that would like to know what DPI is, here's a link that will explain exactly what it is ...

Re: Contest Problem! If You Entered, Read This!

Steve, Go to file and then open.... Find a picture to use and then click on image. Down about halfway you will see Resize / resample. Click on it and you will see a box to change the DPI by itself on the left.

Got your PM and sent a reply! Hope it works for you. wink.gif
