ILLINOIS gun hunters

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but I just read it on the IDNR site. It appears our governor has done something for the good of hunting.

If I read correctly, any unused firearm tags can now be used for the late antlerless only season.

Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich today signed a new law giving hunters more flexibility in using their seasonal deer hunting permits. Senate Bill 2810, introduced by Sen. Gary Forby (D-Benton), allows unused gun deer permits left over from the firearm or muzzleloader-only deer hunting seasons to be rolled over and used during the Late-Winter Firearm Deer Season at no additional charge.

“Hunters for the first time ever will be able to use their leftover permits during the Late-Winter Firearm Season – saving them money and giving them additional hunting opportunities,” said Gov. Blagojevich.

The Late-Winter Firearm Deer Season is an antlerless-only season designed to help increase the harvest of female deer, thus helping to control the state’s deer population.

Previously, the only leftover permits that could be used during the Late-Winter Deer Season were “firearm property-only” permits that allowed Illinois landowners to hunt only on their own property.

Consider me someone in favor of this.

Re: ILLINOIS gun hunters

still a bunch of BS all the late season hunt is for is population control. Ive seen some very large bodied buck, that have dropped antlers get hit, as well as seeing does with twin fawns getting hit. Most guys up here in Jo Daviess county dont do it, but there sure are a few that do. Its all window dressing

Re: ILLINOIS gun hunters

I agree with you that a few bucks that shed early are shot during the antlerless season.I would be dissapointed if I shot a nice size deer only to find out it's a mature buck that shed already.I've never hunted the late season firearm, but if I have an extra tag unfilled I'll be doing it this year.

As for shooting a doe with fawns,if the fawns don't have spots they are old enough to survive on their own and I would probably shoot. That late in the season the fawns should be dependant.I would probably pass on a doe with fawns in October, but after that I don't see no problem with shooting.

Hey Mach1, yes I have been notified of this issue as well. I enjoy it because I do not have a pistol and sometimes have an unfilled tag in my pocket! I will enjoy hunting the late winter cold of IL for a doe! I will definitely be in the woods in JANUARY!!!! bbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Re: ILLINOIS gun hunters

I will be taking full advantage of the situation, if necessary. I personally think it is a good idea. A new job will limit my time in the woods this season, and this will be one more opportunity to fill any unused tags. Besides, the area i hunt could use a little population control. wink.gif
