Which one should I get?

I am relatively new to muzzleloaders, but I have a birthday coming up and think this might be at the top of my list.

I have been considering a T/C Omega, Encore, or the CVA Optima pro. I'd love to hear your recommendations on these or other models. Right now I'm kinda weighing the decision of cost vs. interchangeable barrels.

I haven't heard many complaints about the Encore, but I'm not sure I need the ability to change barrels. Thanks for your help.

Re: Which one should I get?

Before you buy one, make sure you shoulder it a few times, don't just order the one that looks the best from a catalog. I say this, because I personally do not like the encore style stocks, at all. I just think they are 100% uncomfortable. Your opinion may be different than mine though. Any of those guns will suit your hunting needs just fine. I have no real experience with any of them though.

Good idea lil, you need to go and actually hold any you are interested in. See, my Encore is one of the best fitting guns I own. I just added another barrel for my encore, 25-06, my next barrel will be for varmints, like a .223 maybe. They are all good, but remember the future cool.gif

Re: Which one should I get?

I love Thompson Center Muzzleloaders. Everyone I have ever shot had superb accuracy. My dad shoots an old Black Diamond XR and has shot prarie dogs out past 175 with it. I just bought an Omega with the thumbhole stock last season and it shoots lights out.

Also great advice make sure it fits you and you pull it up comfortably.

If you go with an Omega or Omega style rifle you must check out the Omega scope introduced by Nikon. It is a bullet drop compensating scope out to 250 yards for a 250 grain slug and 150 grains of powder. I put one on my TC Omega, it works great. They run about $250 for scope which is pretty reasonable.

Another vote for shouldering anything you're considering.

I have also been looking at Encore versus Omega recently. I tried one of each at Bass Pro and the Omega just felt "right". I think the length of pull might be a bit longer on the Omega, and that that may be why it fit me better.

Sounds good guys, thanks a lot. Looks like I'll be making the trip to Bass Pro soon.

Also, I notices as I was reading that the CVA is about 2lbs heavier than the Omega. Something to consider for long walks to the stand.

Re: Which one should I get?

Not really any help to you, but I shoot a tc black diamond and really like the gun.

If I were in the market for a new ml, think I would have a hard time deciding of the two which one I would pick as both are great guns, but would probably do like lil suggested and go and shoulder each and see which I liked better.

If I lived in louisville, I'd be headed to bass pro just about every weekend.lol. There is also a really nice gun shop in Owensboro KY. www.whittakerguns.com There site doesn't list many of the guns they have in stock, but theres WAY more than bass pro could ever dream of. And you can just grab and shoulder any gun you want, without having to get a clerk to hand it to you, and try to make you buy it. Good luck with whatever you decide on.

Re: Which one should I get?

Lil- I am so glad you mentioned that. I have heard about that place from some kinfolk, but never could find out where it was. Their prices are even better than Bass Pro. I might have to make a trip over to Owensboro.

Well, after much deliberation, I am rethinking the whole muzzleloader decision. I do not have consistent access to private land, and the only public ground I know anything about is archery only. I think I'll put off the smokepole until I know for sure I'll get some use out of it. As soon as I finish school and settle somewhere....
