SuperMn106
If this needs to be moved ok, i just thought it would get more traffic here. My mom wanted me to check out some minnows in our pond. So i looked and there was 2 different types of minnows, both of them looked very different to me. I dont recall ever seeing any like this. They were all around the rocks we put in the pond by our dock. I want to say they are some type of chub but im not sure. What do you guys think? Thanks, Mike

LifeNRA
Re: Help Indentifying a fish! [ QUOTE ] Definitely not a gizzard shad. Looks like a chub of some sort. [/ QUOTE ] Type of chub! I used to catch them on spinners in this creek I used to fish! The little bumps were on the head and sometimes the front of the face. Tominator
Re: Help Indentifying a fish! OK, I googled it. Chub stuff Those bumps mean it's a boy fish apparently. This page calls them "breeding projections."

Strut10
Re: Help Indentifying a fish! Looks like a big male fathead minnow to me.......just like the kind you buy by the dozen or pound at the bait shop.
Hoyt03
Re: Help Indentifying a fish! Def not a gizz shad, its some kind of chub. The bumps on the face occur during spawning I believe

Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Help Indentifying a fish! Could be a goby. I hear they're migrating west and south from Lake Erie.
Buckslayer
Re: Help Indentifying a fish! I've caught them before in the stream behind my parent's house. I've always known them to be chubs of some sort... Maybe I've always known wrong though?!?
LifeNRA
Re: Help Indentifying a fish! Chris has it right, a Creek Chub. Most rivers and streams have them. Well in PA I know of. The Swatara Creek is loaded with them!
buckee
Re: Help Indentifying a fish! I recognized it right away as a chub, because some of the trout streams in northern Ontario are infested with them. They can be a real problem for trout streams. I never did know exactly what kind of chub they were, just knew them as pesky chubs. We used to catch tons of them when we were kids, and many of them had those protrusions on their face. RangerClay
Re: Help Indentifying a fish! We call those Horned Dace here in NY. I also did a google check and horned dace is another acceptable name for a creek chub. Creek Chub Ranger
Guest HaDeRonDa
Re: Help Indentifying a fish! My guess is that it is a goby and it surely is not a horn dace. I caught thousands of them fishing for brookies and that has never been on my hook.
