SKUNKS!

Recommended Posts

Every since I bought my house ive had a problem with Skunks. Generally they just come out at night and stink up the place. They have sprayed my cars and horses in the past. About a year ago they dug their way into a little apartment I have just in front of my house. They lived under the tub until I noticed them. We quickly moved them out and poured ready mix over the hole.

About a month ago I saw one out playing in the field and I grabbed up the .22lr. Dropped him. I thought I had gotten the culprit althought he was pretty small. A couple of weeks pass by and I have the smell again. Then one morning I was getting ready for work (about 3:00a.m.) there was one on the back porch. I about had a heart attack because we have a dog/cat door in the Laundry room. I was afraid he would get in there and spray everything. He was gone minutes later.

Last night I had a buddy over. He was watching Commedy Centeral and I headed out to water the garden. I made it to the frost free hose bib when I heard a rustle beside me. At first I thought it was one of our cats (its late so it was dark). Finally I see loads of white..... Stupid Skunk was roughly 5' away. I waited until he turned away and then sprinted to the house. I rounded up the .22 and my buddy and back out we went. He held the light and a couple of shots later it was over. He was the same size as the one I killed a month earlier! Dang....

I checked the appartment and sure enough, they dug another hole and are comming in and out.... Stupid things. Im going to pick up stuff today to help rid the apartment of the problem. Anyway, I made it outside about 4:00 this morning to leave for work. I could smell a skunk but because I shot one last night I passed it off.... I shouldnt have because one ran across the drive on the north side of the cellar! Stupid, stupid things. He was the same size as the other two.

Now I have a major skunk problem. I guess Im going to get some mothballs and such in hopes it will run them out to their doom.... Anyone have any other suggestions?

Re: SKUNKS!

Dont know Jeramie. Not sure if moth balls will work or not. Short of shooting them, not sure what else you could do. Thankfully, havent ever had a problem with them up around the house here, but have seen them out in the woods while hunting out behind the house plenty of times.

Re: SKUNKS!

Whatever you do Jeramie, just remember, that they have to face you to spray you. We trapped one last summer accidentally. It went in the trap that was set for the groundhog. We had it baited with lettuce. Maybe that will work and you can trap the big one out of the den. It sounds like all you are seeing/killing are the young of the year.

Re: SKUNKS!

I recently got one of those Havaheart traps to trap nuisance coons that have been getting into my corn and garbage.

About 2 weeks after I got it, I set it out near my corn and watched 3 little skunks dance around the trap. About 10 minutes later, momma showed up, and went right for the table scraps I had set in there. Snap! I caught momma, and all her 5 of her babies just hung around the trap. frown.gif Now I had a problem because there's a season on skunk in Ohio and it's closed right now. It's OK to trap and kill nuisance coon in Ohio, but I wasn't sure about skunk. So I called my buddy who has a DNR guy that lives 2 doors down from him (he's an ex student of mine too) and had him ask the warden. My buddy called me back the next morning and said it's OK to pop them, so I loaded the .22 and sniped all 6 skunks. crazy.gif

So, long story short, I'd get a havaheart trap and trap them. Might want to call your local warden first to see if it's OK.

Re: SKUNKS!

What you need to do, is to milk the oil from them and sell it to Cabela's for a cover scent! That is where I buy mine to dose the cats with in the neighborhood! They have to buy it from somebody! smile.gif

I surely don't know how they milk them and I don't want to find out! smirk.gifgrin.gifsmirk.gif

Re: SKUNKS!

DROWN the varmits... wink.gif

Setup a 55 gal. drum and fill it half way with water, then spread grain on top of the water so that the water is no longer visable.... lean a plank up on the drum so that it can be easily climbed by the Skunks,,, and say good-bye stinky..... grin.gifwink.gif

Works great on the farm...... grin.gif

FACT #1,,, a Skunk sprays over it's head when it's defensive..

FACT #2,,, a Skunk CAN'T spray when it's feet are off the ground... wink.gif Making the drum method fume free.. wink.gif

Re: SKUNKS!

you guy's want a laugh. i was helpping the fair board here in connersville indiana and we were cleaning up for the fair to get here and some young girl's were moving 55gallon drum's and ran across one and my stepson thought it was dead and threw a rock at it and it was alive and sprayed so i got 1 of the drum's turned on it's side and used a stick to chase it in . it went in the drum and i flipped it up and picked it up to carry the skunk off and did'nt realize there was hole's in the bottom of it and i got sprayed. had to call my neighbor to come get me cause my wife would'nt let me in the explorer. when i got home i stripped outside and threw clothes away and took a tomato juice bath then rubbed it into the skin then soap showered and the smell was gone. lol i want do that again . that was my first spraying.
