Rhino
Re: Yes sir/Yes ma\'am?? Absoultely! That's the way I was brought up and same goes for my son. He's 19 now and he's still that way. I hope it sticks and he raises his own children that way too. I've heard the same thing that Chris mentioned about it being a southern thing. At least that's what my buddy in Rhode Island told me not long ago. He was somewhat amazed about all the yes sirs he got when he came down to visit recently. He said you just don't hear that in Rhode Island.
archerjg
Re: Yes sir/Yes ma\'am?? I don't have kids, but I still say yes sir, no sir, yes ma'am , and no ma'am. Archerjg
IowaDeerHunter
Re: Yes sir/Yes ma\'am?? [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I think my parents always took it as disrespect when we said "yes mam, yes sir". It was more less a way of being snobby when told to do something you didnt want to do. [/ QUOTE ] Yup! Same here! [/ QUOTE ] Yeah I said it to my dad once when I was little, and he told me to never call him sir. I wouldn't want my kids calling me "sir". I wouldn't be a sir, but a dad. JMO. _MD_
Re: Yes sir/Yes ma\'am?? [ QUOTE ] Nope. I think that's a southern thing. [/ QUOTE ] I agree, No one I know here has their kids say that and my kids aren't required to say it. Being cordial and polite has nothing to do with words sir or ma'am. RangerClay
Re: Yes sir/Yes ma\'am?? [ QUOTE ] One thing I don't tolerate in my class or at home is "hey" I have that right on my syllabus in all my classes "If you address me as 'hey' I will ignore you." [/ QUOTE ] Oooo! I like that! I will have to remember that one. [ QUOTE ] I do require them to call an adult Mr. Miss, Mrs., whatever the case may be. [/ QUOTE ] I do the same thing. 60% of my students are military. They are usually the ones who say "Yes Sir" and I don't care for it. I will usually ask them if I am their commanding officer and ask them to say, "Yes Mr. H." There is one thing that always grabs my attention. In a 180 day school year I can count on one hand the amount of times a student says, please or thank you. If a kid says one or the other I make it a point to thank them for being polite. Ranger

ParrotHead2005
Re: Yes sir/Yes ma\'am?? That is one of my classroom rules. They have to address all people with that response. I give them 2 weeks to use to it and then they get no recess if they forget.
Squirrelhunter91
Re: Yes sir/Yes ma\'am?? Nope.. It's either Mr. or Mrs. until they give you the ok to call them by their first name. Then everybody else who is a close family friend is either an 'uncle' or 'aunt'..

Strut10
Re: Yes sir/Yes ma\'am?? My kids only use "sir" & "ma'am" when they're in deep crap. I think it's a function of which side of the Mason-Dixon line you were raised on. I hear a lot more southern kids using them. I admire that.
