Jeramie Posted July 28, 2006 Report Share Posted July 28, 2006 Last night we were about to head to bed. I looked out one of the glass panes that frames the front door. Rolling around by the Elm trees was a couple of skunks. I run and grab the .22lr and the wife follows me out the door, flashlight in hand. We get out there and the two quickly run behind a tree. Then they come out the other side and are much smaller..... Pretty soon I see why, they start coming out in singe file.. My wife said, "There's Three!..... Four.... Five! Oh my God, how many are there!?!?" Six. Yup, six skunks. Immediately I aim into the crowd and nail one. He folds up, the other scatter. Of course my horses have to check this out so I dint have another clear shot. Pretty soon a large one runs at me ready to spray so I fling more lead. I didn't lead him enough so I'm pretty sure I paunch shot him. He flipped over and high tailed it down the drive (pardon the pun). The rest scatter and I'm trying to get shot but my 4-year old Gelding walks right through the middle of them trying to figure out whats going on. Anyway, three break off and head for cover and one stands its ground........ For about two seconds. "That bloody skunk is deceased. He is no more. He ceased to exist." Anyway, the other three got away. This morning I saw one of them in almost the exact same spot. I was in my truck so I went peddle down but couldn't get him under the tire. Those little things are quick. With the way they've been out I'm pretty sure ill get another or possibly two tonight. If I dont kill these stupid things out quickly I'm going to have to put up the barrel as suggested. I figured there were probably two on my place but thats a total of 7 in a week! They have killed 8 so far but there is one adult that remains under their house. They have tried every trick in the book to get this thing to come out and nothing yet. My neighbor said he is about ready to crawl under there and get it.........................I politely asked if he would wait until I could return with the video camera. A .22 is far less noticeable. I could get a $500 for shooting a shotgun. Trust me though, If I ever seen anything like that again the shotgun will come out. Actually Orlan, I'm going to freeze them and then come deer season let them thaw and wear them around my neck like an air freshener. I planted some trees and built small dams around them to hold the water when I'm watering them.Every night the armadillos dig those dams up.
