257bob
Re: need advice ! The lighter the bullet the less recoil. They make ML bullets as light as 180 grains. I would try to stay below 250 grains for sure. As for powder, you kinda have to see what he can handle. 100-150 grains.
johnf
Re: need advice ! I shoot a 250gr bullet with 80gr of 777 pouder. I've never noticed the recoil. I would guess that it's less than my 243.
wtnhunt
Re: need advice ! I normally shoot a 240 grain xtp mag pushed by 120 grains of loose pyrodex through my black diamond, but when my oldest daughter was learning to shoot the ml, I downcharged all the way down to 85 grains of pyrodex still using the 240 grain xtp. She actually preferred shooting the ml over the wifes .243. Knowing her shots would be under 100 yards and more likely under 75, she shot very well and the gun performed well for her with that load at those ranges. Guest gt2003
Re: need advice ! I was shooting a 300 grain bullet and 90 grains of Pyrodex RS and getting the crap kicked out of me. So, I switched to 80 grains of loose 777 and a 220 grain precision rifle dead center bullet. Much less recoil and a bullet that has awesome expansion and knock down power. Do a search regarding this bullet. There are a number of posts singing the praises of it. I was to the point of giving up muzzleloading until someone here (I believe it was AJ, not sure) recommended it. You can have great confidence that with the above combination he can easily kill a deer without knocking himself out. Good luck, Greg
AJ
Re: need advice ! Yep, I see no reason to hunt deer with a bullet weighing over 250 gr unless the gun absolutely will not shoot it accurately enough. You can drop down to even a 175 gr Duplex Dead Center. Lighter weight bullets mean less recoil, but still have enough energy to inflict quick clean kills on deer sized game.
Guest gt2003
Re: need advice ! Yep, its a tough concept to overcome. The 300 grain bullets shot incredibly well out of my gun. I was scared to drop down to 220 grains. But after seeing the results I don't have fear any longer. If I didn't still have probably 50 dead centers left I might even go lower in weight. Hunter74, I'll repost some pics of the dead centers expansion. These things are incredible. Good luck, Greg
Guest gt2003
Re: need advice ! Here is a photobucket link to the 2 dead centers I've recovered from deer. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b256/gt2003/precisionrifle220graindeadcenters.jpg The one on the left was shot with 100 grains of 777 at about 20 yds. The one on the right was shot at approximately 50 yds. with 80 grains of 777 (loose powder for both bullets). These things are incredible (and I am in no way affiliated with the company although I would be if they asked). If you have any further questions, let me know. Thanks, Greg

I looked on Midway, basspro and cabelas and couldn't find them. I might just be blind.
Guest gt2003
Re: need advice ! John, Here is the link to the Cabelas item. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa...r&noImage=0 It doesn't say "precision rifle" but its the same bullet we are all talking about. If this link doesn't work, go to www.prbullet.com and you can order them directly although I think it will cost a little more. Good luck, you'll be amazed at their performance.
