Anyone trying new BH's this year?

Im going to pack out a few different heads. Im going to carry the 100grn Muzzy and look at a Mechanical too.

When I first started bow hunting I shot Mechanicals because I didnt know how to tune a bow. They simply had better flight. I never actually got to hammer anything with a mechanical and im dieing to know how a good one (such as a RM Gator) will perform. Im heading to Bass Pro today to pick up some Mechanicals and start getting ready for the season. This way if I dont like the flight/ head I can pick more up in a week or so and try again.

Anyone else looking to make any changes this year?

Re: Anyone trying new BH\'s this year?

Sure I am...All of them are going to be new to me this year!

With the Broadhead trades I made with members here and the gift from a good friend I have 3 different kinds of fixed blade BH's to test.

My friend Dave gave me a 3 pack of NAP Thunderhead 100's.

I also made trades with WIDeer4Life and AdvantageTimberLou for broadheads sending them the Mech's I had.

I'll be bowhunting from a groundblind this year more since my wife now has her bowhunter certification and I needed to have fixed blade for shooting through the screens or I would not have switched.

I've already been testing the fixed blade BH's and they fly great...now I'm just fine tuning their flight trying different fletching combinations/offsets to determine the "Effective Range".

BTW...I had my bow tuned great before while using Mech's and that just made them fly even more consistently wink.gif

tongue.gif You should have gotten in on that BH trade thing with me Jeramie...LOL...I sent AdvantageTimberLou some of these:

Cant see the pic, photobucket is blocked here at the office... wink.gif

I should have gotten into that. I have tons of old Thunderheads laying around. Btw, they are a great head. They are very sharp. The only reason I made the switch to Muzzy was because of the interlocking blades. Those boys are tough.

Shoot, we may have to revive that thread before long.

Jeramie, I just remembered something from years ago when it comes to Mech's.

If you tape a sheet of paper to the Backside of a target you will be able to see if the broadhead opened up or not.

Most targets stop the arrow so fast that it slams the Mech's blades shut and you'll think they did not open.

Using this method proves one way or the other by the cuts in the paper wink.gif

Re: Anyone trying new BH\'s this year?

I'm seriously considering hunting with 100 gr. Razorcaps this year. First thing though is to see how they group. I have 6 of them to work with. They advertise field point accuracy. If they fly as well as the G5's, I'll go with them since they have the same cutting diameter but they have over twice the cutting surface which translates into less drag. They should provide greater penetration than the G5. They are basically the same cutting edge design of the Wensel Woodsman that I use hunting with my trad set up. Needless to say I'm impressed with the performance of my trad set up when it comes to slow moving arrows that exhibit great penetration. I hope to see how a fast moving, lighter arrow/broadhead set up with the same cutting surface performs with my compound bow.

Basically I’m still getting over the big one I hit in the shoulder last year in Missouri and didn’t get enough penetration to reach the vitals. Man, two inches to the left and he would have been on the wall. From comparing my broken shaft with my other arrows it looked like I only got about 3” of penetration. Unfortunately that's part of bowhunting.

VTbowman...i just switched to the G5 Tekan 2's. i have been told by my shop pro that they are very accurate and very consistant... i bought the 100 grain Tekan 2's. i haven't gotten them out yet b/c i have yet to buy a target with a broadhead side to shoot into. and i dont want to pay high dollar for a block 4x4 target... even though i have heard they are good targets for that. i will probably just buy a cheap one and shoot into that for a while.

I'll be using Wasp SST Jackhammers this year since my G5 Montecs aren't legal in Oklahoma mad.gifmad.gif

I have some brand new Montecs that I bought because I thought the 100grn were long enough but I was wrong.

May also be trying some new fixed blades if I can just decide on which ones. Sooooo many choices crazy.gifconfused.gifcrazy.gif

I'll be trying out the Rocket Steelhead Extreme 125's this fall. All the features that make the Steelhead the most respected mechanical in the industry, now with a bigger 1 3/4" cutting diameter wink.gif

If I feel like it, I might also send a Rocky Mt. Ironhead 125 towards something. These babies are solid steel, sharp as heck, fly like darts and are incredibly sharp right out of the package. To let yo uknow how good these heads really are, I sold all my Slick Tricks to buy them.

Re: Anyone trying new BH\'s this year?

I too will be shooting the Wasp JakHammer 100 gr.

I shot one last year and my buddy used them for a few years before that. I saw what kind of damage they do to a coyote at 45 yds several years ago. Went maybe 15 yds with a shot to his hind end. Not pretty and that's exactly what I'm after. I tried the SpitFires when I first started hunting and they left a bad taste in my bow. I think the JakHammers will do much more damage with thicker blades and a wider cut. Can't wait to devestate a few deer and make quicker cleaner kills.
