NYBUCK
Did you miss me, probablly not. Ok I will give you the run down or short version of the past two weeks. It will be quick because I am swamped here at work and feel guilty about being on here right now. But thats what you get when you take two weeks off. Anyway, Thursday Noverber 11th right after work I headed off to Adams County Illinois for my bow hunt. Got on the road about 3:15 pm. Drove 3 hours and stopped off at SUNY Brockport where my daughter goes to college and took her and her friend out to dinner. Her birthday was on the 9th so I had the waitress and her staff sing her happy birthday. She wanted to kill me. At 8:15 I was back on the road. I drove untill 1 AM and then stopped at a truck stop and slept until around 5:30 am. Gassed up and back on the road I arrived in Jacksonville Illinois around noon on Friday. I got a cheap hotel and had lunch and did some shopping at Walmart and a couple local archery shops then went and took a little nap. Went outside the motel and a guy all dressed in camo was getting out of his truck. He asked me where in NY I was from and I kinda described it and he said I used to live in Saratoga, which is 40 minutes from me. We talked for a while and then asked if I wanted to grab some dinner. I said sure. He now lives in Illinios but was staying at the hotel because he was leasing some land down this way. We had dinner, talked and shared our thoughts on hunting and everything else. Matt was real cool and we wished each other luck and went on our way. The next morning I woke about 7, ate some breakfast and was on the road about 8 am Saturday to my destination. I was only an hour away so I got there about 9 and noone was at camp. So I unloaded all my stuff and around 10, my outfitter Scott showed up and we talked and he showed me some awesome trail cam pics of a huge 8 point that he had gotten along with some other pretty impressive bucks. Then he showed me around the property and then said if you want to hunt that I should shower up and he would take me over to the other farm and he would put me in the stand by where the trail cam was and hopefully get a shot at the big deer he had pics of. By 1 pm I was sitting in stand. That night I saw 9 doe and one decent buck right at dark. When I got out I met Roy, who works for the outfitters and he would be hunting with me for the week. He told me he had shot a real nice buck and was going to go back for him in the morning. Turned out it was a nice 9 but it did have some ground shrinkage but was still a pretty impressive buck. Roy was a great guy. He helped me a lot and I knew right away he was a serious hunter. Afer showing me pics of his two Boone and Crocket bucks and 7 P&Y, all by bow, I was impressed. He really knows his stuff. Sunday morning saw me back in the same stand, after seeing absolutely nothing I moved to another stand on the property around 10:30. I sat there all day and saw 3 doe and a nice respectable buck but not what I really was looking for. Monday morning they wanted me to go back to the first stand and try my luck. Had a spike walk right under me and then about 9:20 saw a buck walking along way away. Grabbed the can a tipped it a few times. Next thing I know there was four doe and this buck chasing them. Then ended up coming right underneath me and I see the buck had a nice rack but only half of it. I watched them a while and then another buck came right down the same trail. Again a decent buck but not a shooter for me. I waited until 11 and then called the outfitter and he said Roy was gong to the other farm so if I wanted to go that I should meet him back at camp. So I did. By 1:15 I was in another stand at the other farm. This farm was awesome, alfalfa fields, corn and lots of soy beans. That night I saw a small buck a doe and one bruiser that came cruising through but he would not give me a good look. He looked heavy and really got my heart pumping. The next morning, Tuesday, I went to the same stand and didn't see anything at all. Moved to another stand at 10:30 and sat until 1. I liked that stand but figured I better check out a couple others for the future. Went to this stand over looking a corn field that had only had about two swipes aroung the edges. The reat was all standing corn. I got to that stand about 2 pm and before i could get my bow up there were two bucks in the picked part. I slipped my head net and gloves on, raised my bow and knocked an arrow. The deer were about 250 yds away and I played with them by grunting and using the can. Deer kept coming out of the corn. I saw 7 different bucks and one was a real nice one. When he came out the last time I grunted and used the can to try to get him to come my way. I look up and to my right there is a doe right there, then I here something behind me stomping with each step. I slowly turn around and here comes a nice buck. I stand up as slow a s I can and come to full draw. It is real thick and I have one little opening to shoot through. He stops. Please I say, one more step. He starts walking and when he steps into the opening I release. I watch the arrow go, everything seems in slow motion. I know my arrow hits a twig and he runs off. I don't here him crash, some I am worried. Did I miss him? Oh no. It is 4:40 pm and I only have about 35 minutes of light left. I get down after only 10 minutes. I wanted to see if my arrow had anything on it before it got dark, assuming I could find my arrow. I slowly and quietly sneak to the 30 yard shot where he was standing. There is a scrape right there, then I see my arrow. I pick it up and my stomach just turns in knotts. There is blood on it but there is also stomach matter. NOOOOOOOOO. So now I dont know what to do. I didn't hear him run very far yet I didn't hear him crash either. What should I do. I scan the woods and I see him with the binos. Oh no god, his head is up. He is laying down and I know he is hurt but I also know that I must have gut shot him. He is looking the other way and my sent is blowing right at him. He has to be hurting. I dont dare try to get closer because it is so noisy. I sneak out of there as quiet as I can. Now I am sick. I get back to camp and tell Roy the whole story. We both agree to let him lay till morning. It has been warming up everyday and the night was only suppose to get down in the low 40"s. But I figure it will be ok. That night we drive and hour to Quincy and meet the owner of vital bow gear and the national sales rep. Roy shoots for these guys. Let me tell you they are awesome people. Ben, the owner shot a 140 class buck at the camp he was at. They even payed for my dinner. I had a great time time and met some great people and hope made some good friends. That night I couldn't sleep. I woke up the next morning around 6:30, showered up and took my time, The drive over to to the spot was very intense. All kinds of emotions were running through me. When I finally get there I go to where I left my arrow and glassed to where the buck was last night. He is not there. Oh no, I am sick. I walk about 10 yards and pick up blood. I walk about 10 more yards and there he is. He must have got up one time and went to another scrape and died right there. Oh how emotions can change in a heart beat. Now I am excited. I thank god, and look him over. He is a typical 8 but he has another main beam that extends along the bottom of the main frame that is about 12 inches long. He is not huge but he is a truely beautiful animal with lots of character. When I get him back at camp Dave and Scott the two brother that own the service are there as well as Roy. We take some pics and do a rough score. He grosses about 130 but will lose a lot because of the deduction. I am very happy. I would have loved to shoot a 150 or better but I am pleased with this buck. I spend that night and the next morning tying to get a doe, but I was pretty content and more or less just learning new stand sights on the property, as I will be back next year. Thursday morning at 10 I say my goodbyes to Roy and go pick up my meat at the butcher and drive staright through, 16 hours back to NY. Arrive back about 4:30 am and stop at my brother-n-laws to sleep. I hunt Friday Saturday and Sunday with the bow and see nothing but does. Shotgun opened that next Monday and I hunted hard with the gun everyday. Saw a couple small bucks and lots of does. I have a doe tag but will wait to fill that this week-end. Hunting in Illinois was great, when I saw a buck it was usually a good one, but in NY it has been horrible. I dont really care cause I am satisfied, now I just enjoying being out in the woods and seeing what is happening. Now I am back to work and they are coming this afternoon to install my flooring in the kitchen and they just called and said the cabinets are in. Wow, everything couldn't be more perfect. Except..... that I am so behind at work. Oh well, what doesn't get done today will be here tomorrow. I know I know...... I said this was going to be short. But I am just thilled to share my last two weeks with all of you.

For the record that's not that long of a post for 2 weeks in the bush but you don't feel that guilty do ya. You should see the long version of my Kansas hunt.
