Clarification on my post

Ok guys, in relation to my post, I'm sorry if I offended anyone and I hate to start fights. I understand what you all are saying. Taking a head shot at that distance is risky and if I hadn't been feeling confident to make that shot with Andy's gun, I would not have taken it. Also maye I do need more practice but bad shots sometimes happen. I do not know everything so when Andy told me that I need to compensate for the shot when high up in a tree, well I relaized that was something I didn't do not too mention there were some shrubs in the way that may have helped defelct the shot. I hate wounding deer and I always feel really bad about it but I also have to climb back in the saddle. Also I know that shooting a button buck does not allow them to grow into mature bucks but being that deer is our main source of meat, we take what comes. Also as the season progresses, our neighbors get the deer chased all over the place and it gets harder to find the deer. We all have our own opinions and ethics on hunting and I respect you all for that. I do not want to seem like some unethical hunter because unethical is what fits our neighbors and I despise that but maybe what I think ok someone might not. Anyway I apologize to all of those who replied and those who maybe didn't.

First off, congratulations on a good shot, using a scope at 70 yards in the back of the head.

Not my choice of shots either, but I've made a few bad choices in my day.

Sounds like you learned a lot this year when it comes to shooting out of a stand too. You always have to pay attention to where the bullet or arrow is going to exit, more so than the entrance, but you know that now, so I don't have to rant about it wink.gif

Re: Clarification on my post

turkeygirl,

I wouldn't worry too much about it, I think that some people carry this ethics thing a bit too far. All anyone can ask is that you put 100% into what you are doing.

I didn't get to read your earlier post but from what post I have read you seem to be a very dedicated hunter and a caring person so I wouldn't listen to, to much of others people garbage.

I hope you don't get down on yourself too much about this and have a good season...

Well, this may cause some flak, but a 70 yard head shot doesn't sound like much of a problem if you're a good marksman. I've taken much longer head shots on does with weapons that I have confidence in. Look at what the varmint hunters do at 300, 400 or even longer distances. I'm beginning to think that marksmanship (and all of the practice that goes into it) is going out of style. Just this past weekend, my deer hunting gang took a break in the middle of the day and set up some milk jugs at 500 yards. Everyone shot until they knew where their rifle was shooting at that distance and could hit the jug repeatedly. The most it took anyone to get on target was 5 shots. The fewest was 2.

Not that I'm advocating everyone should be prepared for 500 yard shots, but you do need to be ready for whatever distances you're likely to encounter. If that buck of a lifetime walks out at 350 yards, and you've never fired your weapon at a target over 100, what are you going to do? Shoot and hope, stalk and hope, or just sit there and feel stupid?

Re: Clarification on my post

This wasn't always the case, but I no longer take a shot I have to try justify later.

I've missed some shots and made some bad hits because I didn't execute the shot. But never wounded a deer because of the decision to take a bad shot.

Good luck on your next hunt, TG.

Re: Clarification on my post

I like to see people contemplate their shot selections. It's good that they think about things like that. We may not always make good decisions, but as long as we keep trying to make better decisions, we're going to be ok.

As long as when you make a bad decision, you are not so self-critical and beat yourself up so bad that you lose enthusiasm for hunting. I have actually gone through that routine myself once. Fortunately, I eventually got over it.

Re: Clarification on my post

I did read and respon to your other post Ruth, but have not been back to read it since I responded to it.

Would really not let it bother you too much, but still think you should take some time and practice with whatever gun or weapon you intend to hunt with prior to hunting with it. Take the shots you know you are confident with and have confidence in your abilities with that weapon.
