rifleman25
Re: coyote hunting alone I have a mechanical decoy I bought from the same company that made one of the CD's I use out there. Sell 'em when you shoot 'em. As your profile is incomplete I don't know where your from but through out the northern half of North America fur buyers come to areas on a weekly or biweekly basis
jcwa
Re: coyote hunting alone Hunting alone is an advantage in it's self. There is less human sent and less movement. Their are several motorized decoys on the market. Here are several you can look at. Foxpro Jack-in-the-Box Predator Decoy Predator Supreme Decoy Mini-Supreme Extreme Decoy Western Rivers Decoy Stake with Predator Decoy I hunt coyotes to control their numbers, not for profit. Theirs not much of a fur market in my area anyway. Most of the coyotes I take become buzzard food.(They have to eat to.) If I take a coyote that has a good pelt i will skin it and have it tanned. 257bob
Re: coyote hunting alone [ QUOTE ] Most of the coyotes I take become buzzard food [/ QUOTE ] You have some nasty buzzards in your area. The only thing I have ever seen eat a coyote was decomp and time. I can go back months after leaving a coyote dead and nothing has touched it. I like to hunt alone for about anything but coyotes. The best results come from a group of 2-3 hunters. Good luck this fall. Be safe.
Guest Coyote_Hunter
Re: coyote hunting alone i live in Yarmouth Nova Scotia Canada a stuffed toy animal could work as a decoy, or does it need to moved around like the mechanical ones ? Will rotting coyotes make live ones not come into that area ?
rifleman25
Re: coyote hunting alone A rotting dog won't keep others out. I dug a hole last winter and burried a few yotes that had the mange and I'll be darned if something didn't try to dig 'em back up.
Guest Coyote_Hunter
Re: coyote hunting alone i have another question. whare should i carry my ammo ? on a belt around my waist or in a pocket ? if i carry them on belt maybe painting the casings black could help ? also what about my gun stock its a bright reddish finish, would that have a chance to give my poistion away ? jcwa
Re: coyote hunting alone You can use just a stuffed toy if you want to, But you don't have to use a decoy at all. I hunted coyotes for 10 years before I ever tried a decoy. The moving decoys are used to help keep the coyotes attention off of you and on the decoy. I just keep extra ammo in my pocket. You don't want to paint the casing it may gum up your rifle. If your rifle has a high gloss finish, I would cover it with a camo sock or camo tape. to cut the shine down. captkb44
Re: coyote hunting alone Decoys can be as complex as some of these new gadgets on the market today that spin, shake and twirl. It can also be as simple as a pheasant or turkey feather with fishing line attached to it. Generally there is enough breeze or wind blowing that the feather will flutter around. Decoys work good hunting alone or with someone else. I prefer to hunt with someone.........................that way one of us can keep an eye out for one sneaking in the backdoor. Finding a good hunting partner for predators is sometimes harder than hunting the predators themselves. You mentioned using a 30-30, 12 ga. or 20 ga. If your calling them inside 50 yds I would suggest the 12 ga. loaded with Dead Coyote. Good Luck and keep us posted on how it goes.

257bob
Re: coyote hunting alone [ QUOTE ] Pretty sure I read somewhere that coyotes will eat other dead coyotes [/ QUOTE ] You'll have to prove that to me, the coyotes we kill lay around for months and months with nothing touching them, but maybe ants. When we were hunting in SW Kansas we were dumping all of our coyotes in one pasture so we could keep track of the numbers. Not one was ever eaten.
